Does the 153-year-old Government Printing Office need a digital-era name?
Washington Post ^ | April 18, 2014 | Josh Hicks

The Senate may vote soon on a bipartisan bill that would give the 153-year-old Government Printing Office a new name to better reflect its digital-age work.

The legislation, sponsored by Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), would swap the word “printing” for “publishing” to make the agency the Government Publishing Office. It also would change the top two GPO officials’ titles from “public printer” and “deputy public printer” to ”director” and “deputy director.”

Supporters of the measure say the current GPO name ignores the agency’s past and present efforts to reinvent itself for modern times with digital offerings such as e-books, apps and the Federal Digital System, which allows the public to search for, browse and download official publications from all branches of the government.

“The name Government Publishing Office better reflects the services that GPO currently provides and will provide in the future,” said Senate Rules and Administration Committee Chairman Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Why not just stop the charade that these agencies differ in any way and just use the single name of "Government"?

I wonder how many rounds of ammo the Government Printing Office bought this year.

You’d think “Ministry of Truth” would be good enough
for them...

It is wonderful to see my Minnesota Senator working on the critical issues of the day. I’d much rather see this renaming issue handled crisply than see the Senate wasting time trying to balance the budget or deal with millions of undocumented illegals in the country.

I'm curious as to just how much money is entailed in this needless renaming of the department. Is there no longer any printing done by them? Is it all sent out to subcontractors that do the printing? Does it not still involve printing? I don't give a rats butt if they do their work digitally now, in all the mess this country is in, this is what some Senators consider important? Pay me their salaries, I can think up stupid sh!t like this all day without even trying.

The country going to hell in a jet-propelled handbasket and THIS is what the Senate is prepared to debate?

The Empire is being destroyed from the inside by socialist hordes and the government is playing tiddlywinks.

I remember my government ID. In fine print it said “Bureau of Engraving and Printing”.

The ineptness of the current crop of “leaders” in this country is just dumbfounding. The world is burning down around them and all they can think about is changing the name of an office and the directors’ titles. These fellows are so ignorant that they would not be able to pour water out of a boot, even with the directions written on the sole.

Wilson had the Committee on public information.

If it worked for that progressive scumbag, there’s no reason they shouldn’t resurrect it.

Interesting question. There is a center in Pueblo Colorado that prints and mails brochures. Wonder how many they have laid off.

We pay these nin-commie-poops good money to represent us and THIS is what they slave over?!?

Glad you’re going into mothballs, Chambliss.

You’re worse than useless and an idiot, to boot. (Saxby wasn’t aware that Bath-House Barry lies CONSISTANTLY until he broke a promise to the senile senator about the Savannah Port .)

Kind of reminds one of the old Roman Senate eh?
We sure have a lot of horse’s ass senators.

“Bureau of Engraving and Printing”

Subset of Treasury that prints currency. The GPO prints junk mail and 3000 page obamacare bills.

They don’t need to buy ammo, they melt down the lead type and reload brass used by other agencies.
