'Fox & Friends' mistreats Elijah Cummings on IRS emails story
The Baltimore Sun ^ | April 18, 2014 | By David Zurawik

As I watched Tuesday while the anchors on “Fox & Friends” leveled unsubstantiated charges against Rep. Elijah Cummings as if they were facts, I couldn’t help thinking how much more dangerous Sen. Joe McCarthy might have been in the 1950s if there had been a show like this to amplify his reckless allegations.

The Fox News morning show was playing one of cable talk’s dirtier games, and the longtime Democratic congressman from Baltimore was its target for his role in the House IRS probe. The lightweight, smiley morning crew — Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade and Elisabeth Hasselbeck — were saying things no responsible anchors would. They were the kind of things that could seriously damage the reputation of an ideological foe.

I guess the Obama administration will have to start targeting reporters before liberal journalists will acknowledge tyranny ....

I'll wager The Baltimore Sun would be safe from the dragnet.

Issa issued a statement. “These (Lerner/Cummings) e-mails are part of an overwhelming body of evidence that political pressure from prominent Democrats led to the IRS targeting of Americans for their political beliefs.”

ALL OF THIS NEEDS TO GO VIRAL One of the Articles of Impeachment drawn up against Richard Nixon was merely "threatening" to use the Internal Revenue Service to selectively audit political opponents.

OBAMA HAS WEAPONIZED THE IRS AGAINST POLITICAL OPPONENTS ordering multiple covert campaigns of intimidation, threats, and persecution of tea party/conservative organizations, and those daring to criticize Obama's agenda.

<><> Seven lock-stepping Democrats scared-***tless of losing their seats ask the IRS to “Investigate” political opponents,

<><> Rep Elijah Cummings led the Democrat pack in smearing True the Vote patriot Catherine Englebrecht....

<><> the FBI, ATF, the IRS, and OSHA were sicced on Catherine Englebrecht, as she valiantly tried to improve the US voting system.

<><> Obama said Tea Parties were a "threat to democracy."

<><> The IRS (a tax-funded L/E agency) takes its marching orders from Democrat;

THE LIKELY SUSPECTS----DEMS STOOP TO CONQUEUR
order IRS to act to save their seats by Alexander Bolton, The Hill, 2/13/14

Senate Democrats facing tough elections this year want the IRS to play a more aggressive role in regulating outside groups expected to spend millions of dollars on their races. In the wake of the IRS targeting scandal, the Democrats are publicly prodding the agency instead of lobbying them directly.

Dems are also careful to say the IRS should treat conservative and liberal groups equally, but they’re concerned about an impending tidal wave of attack ads funded by GOP-allied organizations. Much of the funding for those groups is secret, in contrast to the donations lawmakers collect, which must be reported publicly.

One of the most powerful groups is Americans for Prosperity, funded by the billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch. It has already spent close to $30 million on ads attacking Democrats this election cycle. “If they’re claiming the tax relief, the tax benefit to be a nonprofit for social relief or social justice, then that’s what they should be doing,” said Sen. Mark Begich (D), who faces a competitive race in Alaska. “If it’s to give them cover so they can do political activity, that’s abusing the tax code. And either side."

<><><><>Asked if the IRS should play a more active role policing political advocacy by groups that claim to be focused on social welfare, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) responded, “Absolutely. Both on the left and the right,” she said. “As taxpayers, we should not be providing a write-off to groups to do political activity, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

Shaheen called the glut of political spending by self-described social welfare groups that qualify under section 501(c) (4) of the tax code “outrageous.” Shaheen is in a good position now but could find herself embroiled in a tight campaign if former Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass) challenges her.<><><><>

Sen. Mark Pryor (Ark.), the most vulnerable Democratic incumbent, said the IRS has jurisdiction over 501(c)(4) groups, as well as charities, which fall under section 5/01(c)(3) of the tax code and sometimes engage in quasi-political activity.

“That whole 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) [issue], those are IRS numbers. It is inherently an internal revenue matter,” he said. “There are two things you don’t want in political money, in the fundraising world and expenditure world. You don’t want secret money, and you don’t want unlimited money, and that’s what we have now.” --SNIP-- /////NOTE: I believe the Congressional "Sergeant-at-Arms" also has arrest powers....under certain conditions.

=============================================

--SNIP--The House Ways and Means Committee Republicans have not ruled out its “inherent contempt” authority to arrest former IRS chief Lois Lerner if Eric Holder continues to refuse to act on the panel’s vote to seek an investigation of Lerner and her role in the IRS targeting scandal.

The Washington Examiner reports, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) spoke about the committee’s threat to hold Lerner in contempt: "The Ways and Means Committee, led by Chairman [Dave] Camp [R-Mich.], has conducted a serious and thorough investigation of the IRS, uncovering abuses and criminal acts that should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

"As I've said, if Lois Lerner continues to refuse to testify, then the House will hold her in contempt. And we will continue to shine the light on the administration's abusive actions and use every tool at our disposal to expose the truth and ensure the American people get the answers they deserve."

The constitutional “inherent contempt” authority gives the House power to hold Lerner until a new Congress is convened in January 2015, which could then renew the subpoena if she continues to refuse to testify, though Republicans are not emphasizing that option.

Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) told The Washington Examiner, "I think we'll deal with that, should that occur, but I think this too is an ongoing investigation, and, frankly, for the attorney general to turn a blind eye to this evidence would discredit him greatly.”

The Baltimore Sun is pretty much a completely worthless rag. It is, de facto, a propaganda arm of the VERY progressive, leftist DimocRATS running the People’s Republic of Maryland.

In Maryland, the only way I can get any newspaper not completely dishonest and leftist is through my subscription to the Wall Street Journal.

If Cummings wanted ‘publicly available information’ why would he be asking the IRS for it in an email? The IRS is part of the executive branch and Cummings has a staff of his own to look up publicly available information. It's pretty clear he wanted dirt to throw at True the Vote,something the compliant IRS might ‘mistakenly’ release.

They've already done so, against the AP & James Rosen on Fox. I always thought that in order to get a warrant for wiretaps, you had to file a sworn affidavit to a judge that a criminal act is in progress. Holder did get a wiretap warrant from a federal judge, but later he claimed that he never thought Rosen was actually a "criminal." Isn't that the definition of perjury?

No, each "member" of the media just hopes the crocodile will eat them last.

Aren't double standards great? If the left didn't have them, they'd have no standards at all.

The left only cares about oppression when it’s they and their Marxist agenda that are being oppressed.

They don’t give a flip if it’s the other way around.
