In one of Mack’s videos he said he wasn’t even there at the ranch when it went down. Said he was tied up in traffic. So I can only assume that it was his suggestion over the phone.

I didn't know he wasn't even there. All I've heard was that he was communicating with them and making the suggestion.

Of course, the media has (predictably) blown this all out of proportion...still trying to portray Patriots as Neanderthals willing to sacrifice everyone but themselves.
