No, they do not need us. However, if you load it on a boat, you lower its net value because of the cost of transportation is higher than moving it through a pipeline to it refinery destination. A pipeline is the least expensive way to move it on a per barrel basis. It is actually the most environmentally friendly too. By building the Keystone pipeline to the refineries in OK, LA and TX it maximizes the net return for the oil at its source(I believe). Those refineries are already set up to produce products from this special resource that differs greatly from Light Sweet crude like out of ND. The heavy crude out of AB is similar to the stuff coming from Venezuela an Iran. Apparently, the Chinese also have refineries to process this type of crude. Most refineries can not break it down.

The Keystone XL project is only trying to build a pipeline to Nebraska. It will deliver product to the Midwest as well as the Gulf Coast.

The Gulf Coast Pipeline project from Cushing, OK to Texas, Beaumont area is already up and running.
