Being half black, he probably never felt like a “Real German”, even if fluent in the language. This feeling of ‘not belonging’ can make a young person look for a group to obtain such a personal bond. Some will find this in the family unit, or church, or in career and education choices. For the person who is not a deep thinker, and is not inclined to contemplate the spiritual world, there are simple ways to find unquestioning acceptance, and that may be through a gang or other group that values antisocial behavior. A sad ending to a short life gone astray.
