Two Russian surveillance planes which flew close to UK airspace have been chased away by an RAF jet fighter.

The aircraft, believed to be Tupolev 95s, were spotted off the coast of northeast Scotland.

They turned away from Britain when an RAF Typhoon was scrambled from Leuchars airbase, near Dundee, where crews are on standby to intercept unidentified aircraft at a moment's notice.

“why would the ruskies be flying those bombers except to try to intimidate......someone..”

That is why I asked if this was usual/unusual.

Have intercepts picked up recently?

The one that got to me was the Chinese sub that got next to one of our aircraft carriers during a exercise.

Here we go, again.

Running frequency scans, and response measurements.

“The Bears are in the air, again.”

Now, if we see anything in print about naval incidents coming out of Scapa Flow ...

I knew an old guy, now deceased, who swears he saw a Soviet aircraft fly over the Texas coastline and back out into the Gulf of Mexico, circa 1950s. I don’t know if he REALLY saw that, but I guess anything is possible?

If so, from whence might it have originated? In the fifties, it wasn't Castro's Cuba. There would've been no base for such a Soviet incursion.

Nothing unusual about it. The number of flights are nowhere near the levels of the Cold War. Since the Russians restarted these flights on a regular basis it results in under 12 flights per year into the Atlantic and North Sea. The Russians are very late this year as the last mission into the North Sea area was back in September 2013.

UK figures for recent years intercepts.

Parliament - Written Answers to Questions 24th January 2013

Thursday 24 January 2013 Angus Robertson (Moray, Scottish National Party

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence on how many occasions Royal Air Force aircraft have been launched to monitor Russian aircraft approaching UK airspace in each of the last three years; and where each such flight was (a) directed and (b) scrambled from.

Andrew Robathan (South Leicestershire, Conservative)

Royal Air Force quick reaction alert (QRA) aircraft are based at RAF Leuchars and RAF Coningsby. The number of days on which QRA aircraft have launched in response to Russian military aviation that approached or entered the NATO air policing area for which the UK has responsibility in the each of the last three years is contained in the following table. The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace at all times. Not every launch resulted in an interception as some incidents were resolved prior to interception.

“the MoD said similar incidents happened eight times during 2013.”

A spokesman said: “Russian military flights have never entered UK sovereign airspace without authorisation.”

lets keep it that way!
