Never call the cops unless there are too many witnesses. But have the area secured long before they get there. That means pets out of sight, locked in a room. That means weapons put away. The area well lit. When you call the cops just figure you are inviting an insecure, armed thug with a chip on his shoulder to come and show how large and in charge he is. So naturally you have to set a scene that would make a grade school girl feel safe. You want to secure the area, don’t leave it to them because that will involve threats, shouted commands, shooting your dog, and probably tasing or shooting family members. Not a joke, there is a very real, non-zero chance of those outcomes for even the simplest call.

Best advice I have ever seen on FR. Cops are not your friends, they were good people doing a hard job. Over the years that has changed, no more “Protect and Defend”
