How my boyfriend and I learned to live on one income [writer thinks $70,000 is a small amount]

In the 14 years I've been with my boyfriend, Nick, we've weathered a lot of storms — from my parents' divorce to paying off $50,000 of debt.

Nick and I started dating in 1999 as poor 19-year-old college students. We didn't know anything about managing money at the time, but we learned together. After graduation, we both found full-time jobs, in finance for me and in IT for Nick.

Living off two full-time incomes was a huge change from being broke undergrads. We opened a joint bank account and finally started to live comfortably.

I came home from work that night and immediately sensed something was wrong. The vibe in the apartment felt very somber. Nick was sitting on the couch, staring at the TV, though not really watching. When I asked him if everything was OK, he looked at me and said, "I got fired today," then went back to (not) watching TV. I'd never seen Nick so dejected. It was truly heartbreaking.

Nick and I began to realize that living off my $70,000 salary was indeed possible

My wife and bring home $3,500 a month and it’s actually hard to stay out of the savings. But we feel very blessed. She has medicare and I have VA. I would love to gross $75,000 a year. I’m sure there are many who would love to make $3,500 a month.

After he was laid off from his $65,000 job, all these two had to live on was her income of $70,000, which she seems to think is small.

Take surveys on the Internet. Whoever makes them up seems to think anything under $100,000 is small. I guess they want to reach the really high earners.

It's funny: would I be eating at McDonald's and taking their survey if I were in a high income bracket? That kind of thinking, though, is contagious. Take enough surveys and you may come to see things that way, too.

I’m not sure I’d be giving him anymore rides unless he chips in for gas.

“I’m not sure I’d be giving him anymore rides unless he chips in for gas.”

He stayed with my 24 hours after I’d had surgery. He also took me there and picked me up. He’s very Christian and it’s to the bone, not skin deep. He just has no concept of how to save money or live on a budget.

Living on Central Park West in Manhattan might be tough on $70K a year.Ditto for living in Bella Pelosi’s district. But elsewhere....piece of cake.

The exact same thing happened to me. Except that we were married, and instead of my husband getting fired, it was me who quit because I was pregnant with our baby, which was due soon.

Not a livable wage in Boston, either.

Unfortunately, the same job that pays $70K in DC pays $30K in Des Moines or Nashville.

I've been there. Our type of person will never understand that type of person, ever.

it looks rather pleased with itself, high maintenance too...

A friend of mine had a "high maintenance" wife. As soon as his business went bankrupt, she was out the door, filing for divorce, and out looking for the next sucker.

The woman in the article is sticking with her man, and working out how to keep going on just her income. That is not "high maintenance".

This woman is way too old to have a “boyfriend”/shack-up lover. Don’t these people EVER grow up?????

If you're 33 yrs old and "can't commit" yet, you're both a mess. And I don't mean the financial issues.

Good grief. Grow up, already.

HM comes in many flavors... needful emotional black holes, always demanding things their way, always complaining, a lot of HM women are there for the long haul and not simply gold diggers

When my son and dil were married they decided from day one that all of her salary would go into savings and they would live on only his. Best decision they ever made, particularly as they look at other couples their age who are deeply in debt.

It’s not been easy sometimes and my grandson has grown to hate the word “budget”, particularly when he is denied something his friends have. But hopefully he will understand some day and realize that living within your means is an excellent idea.
