Free dental clinic to draw thousands in Hartford

More than 2,200 patients are expected to seek free dental work at an annual clinic in Connecticut. People started lining up early Thursday for the event. The seventh annual Connecticut Mission of Mercy free dental clinic is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the XL Center in Hartford.

My dentist participates in thus. He told me there is a particular effort to reach out to homeless veterans. Imagine living on the streets with an untreated toothache.

A lot of dentists spend a lot of their time performing charity dental work, and for the most part, getting little credit for it.

To add to this, many poor people will put off dental work until easy problem have become acute, so dental charity is not so much just filling a cavity or two.

A lot of teeth are too far gone to save, infections and abscesses are common, along with the occasional oral cancer.

I’m always amazed that there are no personal injury suits as a result of these. Is it because they are charitable? If we could provide basic health care in gymnasiums, couldn’t we significantly lower the cost of health care? I know the gyms are likely safer bacteriologically that the hospitals... /s
