I was kind of amazed a year or so ago on my first trip to a local Social Security Office. Two armed (looked like .40 cal) cops on duty in this small office which has maybe half of a floor in a 5 story suburban office building.

I guess I just don't get it. Why the heavy security? Is someone going to stick up a Social Security office?

Don’t the Army, Air Force & Coast Guard all have their own criminal investigative services?

You might be right. When I went there at age 65, I was by far the oldest person waiting to see a 'representative' -- who was a miserable woman with a very bad attitude who offered no help at all.

It was a total waste of time to even go to that office.

Anecdotal, but I was shooting the breeze with the guys the other day, and one of them related the story of a local woman who started working for the SS administration right out of high school.

She retired after 48 years, and is apparently taking home $100,000 a year in retirement. Doesn't that just warm the cockles of your heart?

How come MY high skool counselor never told me to go into "publik surviss"?
