Skip to comments.Paul: 'Difficult to turn the clock back' on O-Care

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) admitted Friday its difficult to turn the clock back on ObamaCare, but proposed making the law voluntary as a possible fix for consumers.
I think its going to be difficult to turn the clock back. People get assumed and accustomed to receiving things, particularly things that they get for free, he told a crowd of students at Harvards Institute of Politics on Friday.
Pauls comments echo those of other Republicans who have admitted it will be difficult to fully repeal the law after some of its more popular provisions took effect. The potential 2016 presidential candidate said he ultimately doesnt think repeal is possible without Republicans controlling the House, the White House and with close to 60 votes in the Senate, like Democrats had when they passed the law.
But he predicted the cost of the law could ultimately have dire effects, suggesting they could bring down local hospitals or hamstring state governments.
In the meantime, Paul offered a fix.
I think one of the practical things you might be able to do, and I think the public at large might accept this, is to make ObamaCare voluntary. You make it voluntary, basically you get rid of the coercion, he said, presumably by eliminating the penalty those without insurance are required to pay, known as the individual mandate.
He said he may keep some parts of the law, like the subsidies to help poor Americans afford insurance, or the Medicaid expansion -- two of ObamaCare's more popular provisions but potentially its more expensive.
Does that get rid of the subsidies? Not necessarily, or the Medicaid. But I think also were going to find out we cant afford to have everybody on Medicaid, we cant afford to have everybody on subsidized insurance, Paul said.
The Kentucky senator also railed against President Obama for the idea of the law in the first place, telling students gathered at Harvards Institute of Politics on Friday that Obama says that you are not smart enough to choose your own insurance.
Paul, who signed up his family for insurance under ObamaCare used his sons plan as an example. He said it includes coverage for a number of unnecessary procedures because the president says hes too dumb and cant buy an individual product that would cost him a lot less and wouldnt have as many things included.
Of course he would see no problem in scrapping O’Care for a single payer system where everybody is on the Gov’t. Res.
Difficult does not equal impossible.
Oh man this country is going down hard.
And the rest of western civilization with it.
And it is no longer some distant event. We will not survive Obama.
Absolutely wrong, Rand.
Very disappointing whine on Rands part.
Really............makes me wonder.
Load’o’Crap........nothing about O’Care is free.
So then, I guess that when the going gets tough, the uuuuhhhhhmmmmmm...
At least it wasn’t over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.
And let’s not forget, since our representatives are so underpaid, that we should not expect them to undertake the really, really difficult things.
I swear, if these nancy boys were our rulers back in the days of the revolution, we all would be kissing the Queen’s ass today...
More difficult than living with it?
At this point, it looks like the best possible outcome is total collapse of the US Federal Gov sometime before November 2016.
With the exception of Arizona, Americans turn the clock back every fall. NEVER SAY NEVER! It’s time for Americans to draw their own red line against communism.
Sadly, you’re correct. There’s no way we survive Obama. None.
These politicians have no will anymore.
THE US GOVERNMENT HAS NO BUSINESS IN THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY.
People get assumed and accustomed to receiving things, particularly things that they get for free
So effin what?!?! Oh, they [takers] wouldn't vote for the DOUCHEBAGS THAT FOISTED IT ON US anymore?
We have NO ONE to fight for us, anymore.
Well Rand, the difficult is do-able and the impossible just takes a little longer!!! (unless you become just another serial compromiser!!!)
America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi!
Rand has been to goofy as of late.
It is not as difficult as other stuff that is going to have to be done to keep the country from going under. This is one of the easier things that needs to be done.
What the hell are these guys good for anyway?
I say jack.
We tried telling people. No one wanted to listen. So we all get what THEY asked for.
The acorn doesn’t fall far from the oak tree.
Regime changes is the best solution.
Of course it's inevitable anyway. NO regime in history has survived a currency collapse.
Some new form of government always emerges from the ashes.
Makes you wonder whether he already fell for a staffer?
I’m done with Rand Paul.
They’re already crafting cop outs for failing to repeal this pile of merde.
There’s no hope.
And who cares if it is hard. Just do it!
So when a fireman goes to Paul’s house, which is on fire with family on the second floor screaming to be saved, the fireman has a ligit excuse that it is too hard?
He gets paid to do hard things.
Get at it.
By the way, there is another fellow in DC that talks about how governing is hard...
What is his name...
The shine is gone from Paul as far as I am concerned.
Elect Ted Cruz!
Of course not but Paul's being honest. Undoing it will be very difficult now that the machinations are in place (and some Republican voters are actually benefiting from it).
To use a couple of cliches, elections have consequences and you can't put toothpaste back in the tube. When Obamacare fails, it will be replaced by single payer. We're not going back. We don't have a time machine or a magic "do-over" button.
I was kinda thinking an asteroid strike or something like a Carrington event is going to be needed.

An intriguing idea ...
You could offer a product and people could either:
a) Buy it
b) Not buy it.
Could this be a workable model for the health insurance industry?? Has any country ever tried this?
If such a concept worked, could it be extended to other products, such as milk or bread?? Imagine a world where you could choose to buy bread -- or not buy it!
This is genius. It will need a name. I suggest: ObamaMarket.
Rand has become Romney with bad hair.
what a l**p D**k
what part of o’care is free?
If it is free then shouldn’t everyone be automatically enrolled in it? everyone who pays taxes that is. The IRS knows who they are.
“An intriguing idea ...”
MADNESS!!! We cannot EVER be allowed choice. Especially not free choice. Are you some kind of nut? People would get ideas and then what would happen to the climate?
Arm up, as the day of the soap box and ballot box may be drawing to a close.
Who would have ever thought such a statement about America could be even slightly possible?
Boy is this guy a dissapoinment !
Anyone paying attention for the past 10 years or so.
Couldn’t have said it better myself!
Perhaps, God will tear this apart.
Washington is a very seductive place. The trappings of the establishment are hard to resist. Cruz rides the train to work and is ignored by his colleagues, for instance. Rand has endorsed Mitch, so methinks he has chosen the dark side. Pity, and I want my money back.
Ever hear of “The Contract with America” and “The Welfare Reform Act”?
Paul is a jackass loon but, gotta keep him around.
Need to fire Boner, Can’tor and McFawnel.....
7m signed up... it’s not that difficult
of course, there are 535 people salivating over the power and money that will come from it... so don’t expect those people to shut it down anytime soon
He had gone off rez on a bunch of stuff...all serious stuff and he still has a couple of Freepers running around the threads with the devotion of a new Scientologist making excuses for him. Just watch they will arrive soon.
Don’t believe everything you read in the funny papers, especially about Ted Cruz:
