Our Carrier Video Is Way Cooler Than Yours (China touts its new toy)

Ever since 1986′s Top Gun, music and the carefully-choreographed mayhem that happens on a carrier’s flight deck have gone together like peanut butter and chocolate.

But if you thought such confections are limited to the U.S. Navy, you’d be wrong. Not only does China have a new carrier, with another on the way, it now has a video showing off some of what its existing flattop, the Liaoning, and its J-15 fighters can do.

The video celebrates the 65th anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army Navy. It was produced by AVIC—the Aviation Industry Corporation of China—a state-owned aerospace and defense company. There are no English subtitles, but the pounding music and great photography get the message across.

In contrast, the U.S. Navy’s “Royal Maces”—an F-18 squadron aboard the USS George Washington—have just released a video, below, featuring their own carrier-base

People’s Liberation Army Navy? Can’t they make up their minds?
What do they do when football season rolls around? Play with themselves?
Hu? Wang Chung? Sum Ting Wong.

Last I checked in, they didn’t have pilots who were carrier trained. Looks like they could be up to daylight carrier landings in skill, although there was no full-speed landing video, so it could have been faked.

Help us keep the peace and we’ll get along fine. Start taking stuff that isn’t yours, and you might want to train them on water survival.

Easy kill for the US Navy. Not at all an easy kill for the nations in China's neighborhood, and that's the intended audience for China's muscle flexing, not us.

Good observations. Some of this video looked like animation.

As for the singer and the training scenes, not to my taste.

Paid for with American dollars, thanks to free trade and outsourcing.

1) notice how so much of the Chinese deck operations are copied from US, color job designations
2) We have a big lead that is eroding everyday as the Chinese are eager to learn and catch-up
3) We have kept our lead by constant innovation. It will be hard to innovate if the budget is cut. We are down to 11 carrier groups. It wasn’t so long ago we had 18.
4) The Chinese will keep steal our secrets until they are able to innovate on their own, so don’t sell them short.

Most of China’s naval operating procedures were learned during Clinton’s ‘open house’ on US Navy ships for the Chinese PLA Navy.

What’s to brag about? Sure, they have a carrier, but it was, after all ‘made in China’. Pretty soon the batteries will be dead and the island will be broken off.

Of all the things you can do at sea, carrier operations are the hands down most dangerous in the world. The flight deck of a carrier is like having New York's JFK, Chicago's O’Hare, and LAX International airports all going on at the same time within a 200 foot by 500 foot area of deck during flight operations. Navy physiological testing has shown that night carrier landings under tactical conditions, even without weather involved, are more stressful than flying real combat missions.

So into this pool for carrier qualified pilots and crews splashes the new kid on the block — the Chinese PLAN. Those Navies who have operated carriers for any length of time (U.S., UK, France) would be unanimous in telling the new kids on the block they are seeking entrance into a very special group of sailors and airmen. The price of admission is high; it's paid in blood for those whose skills aren't up to the task. The learning curve is steep; it borders on exponential. Throwing masses of pilots at the problem will not solve the deficit in carrier qualified aircrew, but there are plenty of potential graves available for the newly initiated to the carrier aviation world.

The Chinese PLAN is quite willing to expend as many lives as it takes to become able to operate carriers. These carriers are not the equivalents to the US Navy's CVNs, but they are intimidating as hell to China's neighbors. This is especially true since America has no foreign policy for the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean areas of operations. The American resolve that has provided security for many nations in the area against Chinese expansionism, is now viewed as being little more than State Department bloviating. Allies and friendly governments from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, India, and Australia are nervous over China's naval buildup and saber rattling. At home Barry Obozo and Chuck Hagel are doing their level best to destroy the US Navy's ability to counter the Chinese in the Western Pacific and IO areas.

TU-214sr/u/t “Special Mission” aircraft.
Russia is building several versions on the TU-214 platform, from a “Looking Glass version that is already flying, to a “Joint Stars” version, to an AWACS replacement for the Beriev A-50.

A lot of the electronics are coming from China.
