NRA Recruiting More Female Firearm Instructors

GREENVILLE, S.C. - If you're a woman and you're licensed to shoot, the National Rifle Association wants you! The group wants to increase the amount of NRA certified female instructors nationwide.

Ariel Lewis grew up knowing how to shoot. Her parents were military and her grandfather was a hunter.

“It's just kind of a thing where you want to be one of the boys. You want to be able to do what they can do,” she said.

Now, Lewis is an NRA certified firearms instructor. She’s one of two at Sharpshooters indoor gun range in Greenville. She's noticed the rise in women wanting to learn, often wanting a fellow female instructor.

“Men come in and kind of want to take charge and bark orders, so you need a woman to kind of slow it down and approach it at a different level,” she explained.

It's a trend not going unnoticed by the firearms industry with pink and pastel guns infiltrating the market. Now, the NRA is responding. They say they're trying to boost the current 8,000 females teaching across the nation.

Qualifications start with a concealed weapons permit. From there, a training course is offered through the NRA by women and for women. You can sign up through the NRA's website.

I think a lot of women are taking that leap like "I’m going to be able to defend myself," said Shea Kim.

Kim is one of the 8000. The retired veteran owns and operates Greenville’s Definite Defense. Each day she teaches women how to safely handle and operate a firearm.

“That's why I got in the business, to make women feel comfortable and feel like they can do this,” said Kim.

Yes, she is. A lady who is one of our regulars on the North Carolina forum is an NRA firearms instructor. One of these days I’m going to get some time off and go do some shooting review with her. I haven’t shot since my father got sick in the mid -00s.

To what problem is this the solution? I’m asking myself whether males or females would rather have a female instructor. My experience tells me: Neither.

I don’t know. To be honest, I have only shot a couple of times at a range. I don’t own guns but have been thinking about it lately. I worry I am too old (61) to start now but things are getting so bad that I can see why people want to be armed.

I fear a breakdown of society eventually and it will be every person for themselves. Maybe I’m getting paranoid in my old age. But my in-laws who live in Florida are very well-armed. My plan is to head down there if things really get bad.

I was on the rifle team at the University of Akron. Riflery is an NCAA sport for which I received a scholarship. As a female, I found it sometimes awkward to be coached on my position by a male. This is not because of the reasons that are popping up in your heads, but because of simple physics. A woman’s body is (gasp!) different than a man’s and it’s nice to work with somebody who has better knowledge of the female physique. Now that I have my concealed carry license, I’m considering becoming a trainer.

Oops. What I said was unclear. You're absolutely right that everyone should be armed because of the new hazards facing us. All I was commenting on was the emphasis the NRA seemed to be putting on female—as opposed to male—firearms instructors. I just don't know any actual students, male or female, who said, "Gosh, I wish I had a female instructor" when it came to learning the ropes.

We live in a highly mobile society, and bad guys slither around a lot. And I think it's been rare in the course of history that ordinary people didn't need to be armed for protection in their houses and when they traveled.

If you're a woman and you're licensed to shoot,

I stopped right there. There is no such license in SC, or in any free state. The urinalist probably doesn't know that, probably hailing from some commie hellhole that licenses taking a whiz.

Thanks, TC. Come on up. I will be running some IDPA prep/defensive drills with the advanced shooters in Ladies League next week.

And yes, most female shooters (especially beginners) prefer a woman instructor.

I’ll send you a FReepmail later. I have a free weekend scheduled this summer, and I don’t have to take the Tiny Pink Queen of Evil with me anymore.
