It seems that Blue Cross and Blue Shield dolled out $73,000 not to fight obesity, but to promote Islam.
Dearborn is set to be a part of a new program that aims to study and help prevent obesity, particularly among Arab American children, thanks to a nearly $73,000 grant.
Suha Kridli, assistant professor at Oakland University’s School of Nursing who secured the grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation for the “Improving Health Behaviors in Arab American Youth” project, said she selected Dearborn for its high concentration of Arab Americans.
The plan, she said, is to for an advisory committee comprised of Dearborn public schools faculty and community members to offer suggestions for changes to the curriculum, like removing mention of foods that Arab Americans typically don’t eat, like pork, and including mention of holidays that they celebrate, like Eid.

Just to let you know - does 9/11 mean anything?
I live in Northern NJ, a place with many people of Arab descent. I have not found them to tend to fat, they are rather slender as a group. OK, some older people may be heavy, but children and young adults, no. Quite thin as a rule, so I don’t get what they are driving at.
Waste of money as they’re slowly being replaced by middle eastern Christians. (Who don’t eat a lot of pork themselves)

I knew it at the time, 9/11 wasn’t enough to wake up the country to the specific threat - it only let the country know that there are mean terrorists out there. We needed 2 more 9/11’s - thankfully didn’t happen, but it also means the country, as a whole, is clueless.
There’s a reason why it’s referred to as Dearbornistan.
I would think that they would have a more healthy diet than most. They eat a lot of grilled meats, veggies and fruit.
I gain weight when I hear the word "oreo"...but I don't have the same reaction to "BBQ".

In the Middle East and south Asia, that's probably true. Latin Americans eat some decent fruits, grains and legumes in their native countries, too. However, when they come to the US, especially a couple of generations in, they tend to eat high-fat, high-carb, high-sugar junk, and get obese and develop type-2 diabetes before they're 30.
Actually, Muslims suffer from a high incidence of diabetes. They eat a huge amount of white rice.
Although I guess if you had been bacon deprived all of your life you might go a little crazy once you have your first piece.
