That aircraft was detected WAY out and the ship wasn't going to fire absent being fired upon.

If ROE changes to "fire on detection and confirmation of target", everything changes.

That's not to say that I would dismiss Russian capabilities out of hand. They are making a small quantity of good stuff and revolutionizing their C3. Of course they are a formidable power now, and getting stronger.

Interfering with a surveillance radar is an overt hostile act. (As is painting an aircraft with a fire control - as opposed to tracking - waveform.) If they jam or spoof, we should be able to at least illuminate them with a fire control waveform. Your move, Ivan. (I knew guys who did Patriot testing at White Sands. Patriot has a P-sub-K against air breathing aircraft slightly higher than 1. For grins and giggles, they would illuminating an Air Force aircraft with a fire control waveform. AF. Did. Not. Like. That.)
