Some neighborhoods more than others, but overall our nation suffers from laziness, greed, political ignorance and apathy of the citizens. As a result, we are ruled by scoundrels.
The old saying goes, "a politician can always count on Paul's vote, when the government robs Peter to pay Paul."
Another famous quote (paraphrased) that nobody is quite sure of the source is that a republic/democracy is a temporary thing, that can not last long after the public realize that they can vote themselves the riches of the treasury, and will continually elect those who promise them the wealth of others.
