Obama responds to racist comments attributed to Los Angeles Clippers' Don Sterling

The racism controversy embroiling Don Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, has reached half way around the world to Malaysia, where President Obama is on a diplomatic mission to Asia Pacific nations.

At a press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak Sunday, Obama was asked about racist comments Sterling allegedly made about African-Americans.

"When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don't really have to do anything, you just let them talk. That's what happened here," the President said. Obama also said Sterling's alleged comments are an example of how "the United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race and slavery and segregation."

"That's still there, the vestiges of discrimination. We've made enormous strides, but you're going to continue to see this percolate up every so often," Obama said in Malaysia.

Sterling, who has owned the basketball franchise for nearly three decades, is now under investigation by the NBA over the alleged comments.

According to the website TMZ, Sterling made the alleged discriminatory remarks during a 10-minute argument he had with girlfriend V. Stiviano on April 9. TMZ posted a recording of the argument online Friday.

If authentic, the remarks seem to reflect Sterling's embarrassment and frustration with Stiviano over her associating with African-Americans at Clippers games and for posting such pictures on her Instagram account.

“When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don’t really have to do anything, you just let them talk.”
By all means, please continue, Mr. “President”.

My precise thoughts on reading his remarks. It’s not like we can do anything about his constant yammering so we just let him talk - like any ignorant fool.

Choose your battles. Defending Donald Sterling is pointless.

Why would anyone do that? He's a RAT.

Of course Captain Midnight has to comment. It furthers the “Racist America” meme that he and his administration have fomented since he got into the White House.

It dovetails nicely with the class warfare meme also.

He wants the populous at each others throats so we won’t notice his dictatorial moves on virtually everything affecting our lives.

Especially the lives of the taxpaying, producing, middle class as it is reduced to standing on the street corner with a tin cup.

Did Sterling consent to being recorded? Isn't it illegal to tape someone's private conversations?

He was apparently asked about it, so offered up an answer, and I have to give him some credit. His statement, “When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don’t really have to do anything, you just let them talk. That’s what happened here,” is a pretty good defense of free speech.

I only wish he and about 150 million other Americans ACTUALLY MEANT IT when they said they support free speech instead of the usual, “I support free speech, as long as I agree with it.”

Ted Koppell — of all people! — commented back in the ‘80s that the concept of free speech wasn’t devised to protect popular opinions — those are protected by their very nature — but unpopular ones. That always stuck with me, and it sure is appropriate these days.

Did Sterling also refuse to fund his girlfriend’s birth control?

What does he see in her?

A lithe attractive young female with raging hormones and an equally vigorous libido.

What does she see in him?

I wonder if Obama will invite Democrat Don Sterling and his girlfriend to the White House for a beer?

I condemn what Sterling said but what the NBA should really be focusing on is the criminality within the league.

He’ll weigh in on anything that he can use for a slight bump in the polls. Notice however the measured tones and careful wording? Had this been a prominent conservative, say Rush can you imagine how he would have played it?

Sterling is a owner/CEO who disrespects the very employees that bring his enterprise success. There are a goodly number like him and they are are all POS.

It’s delightful to hear Obama complain about racism in America. Our “Halfrican” president has ridden the magic carpet of racial quotas all his life. He gets 125.7 per cent of the black vote. No racism there, no sir.
