Captured over at The Corner, George Will was on Fox this morning and asked (for, I assume, the 3 millionth time) about a possible Hillary Clinton run and her inevitable victory. As you’ll see in this video, Will was not impressed.
“It’s reminiscent of when Roger Mudd of CBS asked Ted Kennedy a not unexpected questionin 1980: ‘Why are you running for president?’” Will said. “By the time Ted Kennedy quit stammering he was handicapped.”
I just finished a radio interview this afternoon where the same subject came up. For my part, I think George is being a bit optimistic. As far as the Democratic nomination goes – which wasn’t what Will was talking about, I know – the only person who can stop Hillary is Hillary, and that’s if she decides not to run or some aspect of her personal life makes her think better of it. Yes, I realize that she was “inevitable” in 2008 also, but I don’t see a parallel between the two. In that campaign, Hillary was inevitable until the Democrats found somebody more inevitable and with an equally, if not more compelling narrative. The First Woman President storyline was able to be trumped by the First Black President storyline. There is nobody waiting in the wings right now who can deliver that kind of bang for the buck as far as the Democrats are concerned. And if she decides to bail out, they’ll manufacture another one to match, likely in the form of Elizabeth Warren. (Or so I hope. She’s completely beatable.)
In the general election, it’s another story, but that inevitability narrative is still probably stronger than Will is giving credit. Her numbers have sunk a bit since her time at State, but she can still muster favorability near or above 50 and that’s a fairly golden ticket. She’s also got more experience in running under her belt and a fully formed team waiting to leap into action. (Not to mention a mountain of funding ready to shower down on her from numerous PACs and other resources.)
Perhaps Will – given his Kennedy comparison – means she won’t be formidable on the stump and in debates. That’s possible, I suppose. Even she was unable to name a significant achievement of her own as Secretary of State and neither can her supporters. But will that matter to the voters? A lack of accomplishments didn’t stop them from voting for Barack Obama in droves. (Twice!) We might be expecting a lot out of the national electorate to be that discerning. Still, at least Will isn’t throwing in the towel, which would be a pretty bad omen at this early stage.

She is not inevitable and is beatable. I remember reading an interview were she wasn’t able to name anything she has done that qualifies her to be CIC.

Hillary is a place holder and an intentional distraction. The Democrats don’t want to expose their real candidate to the conservative scrutiny and criticism that the Democrats use on Republican potential candidates.
We need to search them out and keep pressuring people like Elizabeth Warren.
She has always been worthless in an interview. Now that she has that 2AM phone call with maximum pressure and she went back to sleep. How worthless will she be answering to that specific failure.
That’ll give Hitlery a pizzy-fit.
George rarely steps of the conventional wisdom……he did here.
Not formidable, but still inept and repulsive. In other words, an ideal liberal candidate.

Without Divine intervention Hillary will be president. I hope I’m wrong. Or I hope for Divine intervention.
When Obamacare failed the Dems needed another story to staunch the damage and fill the headlines so Hillary stepped in.
My guess is that Leon Panetta will be the real nominee in the end.
The problem, George, is that the Republicans have no candidate who's both nominable and electable. They have candidates who are electable, but not nominable. And they have candidates who are nominable, but not electable.
In the land of the blind, the half-blind old woman may become queen. Unfortunately.
She has no interpersonal skills.
And I won't say how I come to know this.
Historically, she also has an uphill battle.
Unlikely BHO approval ratings will rise despite his attempts to delay Obamcare and I can ‘t find a case if a president left office unpopular, his party still won the WH.
She could be tied to Obama’s third term

Just because the Democrats are probably only using Herself, Madame Benghazi, the Cold & Joyless, and soon-to-be grandmother to Rosemary’s, er, Chelsea’s Baby, as a stalking horse, does not mean that some early opposition research can be underway right now, directed at the probably alternatives the Democrats are going to dredge up.
Jerry Brown of California is well past his expiration date, but someone like Andrew Cuomo of New York still has the credentials (as a girly-man) to cover the feminist vote.
Though Joe Biden may entertain notions that he might himself like to become Next Occupant of the White Hut, that probably sounds better inside his own head than in actual practice.
Elizabeth Warren has already more than half-way talked herself into making a run, but frankly, without the George Soros syndicate coming up with dedicated support, that too is a distant dream.
There are probably a number of university presidents and/or elected state legislature members whom have not yet been prominently polished up for display. Their farm clubs may not be well-known, but they have been training, perhaps for years, already. They will know all the right words and phrases, and have carefully doctored resumes.
hillary can't be beat if the candidate is a globalist elitist pro-corporate sellout. She can't be beat if we don't get a candidate who will get out there early and with the facts about Benghazi, about the mess she helped make of global affairs, and with a lot of energy to wear her down and make all to see what an over-the-hill crone she is.
Ted Cruz is the guy to do that. There is no way hillary could survive a campaign against his intellectual and rhetorical skills and his high energy.
Leon Panetta, I hadn’t considered him. I think that you could be right. He would be truly dangerous, especially with all the top positions that he has held.
