San Francisco Is Dead. Long Live San Francisco
Techmeme; San Fransisco Magazine ^

n 1999, my wife and I saw a For Sale sign on a small house on Nob Hill, two blocks away from the apartment where we’d been living for years. We went to look at it. Large sections of Nob Hill are basically extensions of Chinatown, and this house and the connected three-unit apartment building behind it were essentially run-down tenements. About a dozen people were living in the front house, squeezed into rooms that had been crudely subdivided by sheets and plywood partitions—doors sealed off, the staircase drywalled over, an illegal kitchen installed upstairs. The rear apartments were in a similar condition.

This was the height of the dot-com boom, when the first generation of techies and entrepreneurs was throwing big bucks at everything in San Francisco. But even though the price of the property was really low, only one other party bid on it. The reason wasn’t hard to figure out: The rents from the back building were practically nonexistent, and the last thing the dot-com crowd wanted was to become Chinatown landlords. That prospect didn’t faze me: I’d been renting from a Chinese landlady for 16 years, and I figured I was karmically due to turn the tables.

So we bought the place. But before we could move in, we first had to evict the tenants crammed into the single-family house. It was a long, expensive process.

Ten years (or so) ago I had the lovely honor of touring a rental house near Santa Maria, Ca. The owner had rented it in good faith to a couple who were probably paid for securing the property initially. He believed that at some point as many as six families were living there. Needless to say when he finally regained control of the house it was destroyed. A highlight: a cheap plastic shed was screwed to an outside wall to cover a new entrance that was chopped into a bedroom... Which had been completely walled off from other portions of the house. Master carpenters no doubt.

Let the Dem techies get killed by the Dem poor. They both deserve each other. Dem techies oppose “dirty” industries that hire blue collar and open CA to every poor, illegal immigrant with generous entitlements. Technies deserve their fate. Selling smartphones at $ 300 and paying the Chinese factory $ .75 to make it and pocketing the $ 299.25 in their own corporate pocket, and claiming they cannot build a factory in CA and hire those blue collars in SF, frack them. Open borders, generouse entitlements, green industries only creates blue collar poor who will eventually join class hating leftist in open revolt against the techie rich. Atleast TX has industries of all kinds, and all classes of people will get jobs like the US of the past. The CA free trade, globalistic, green and hitech industry only approach will fail in violent revolt and massacres of the 1 percent. If that happens, it is a warning to those who think free trade, globalism, illegal immigration is the solution for the US.

So yes, the sudden influx of highly paid workers has exacerbated San Francisco’s housing problem. But the real problem isn’t those workers, or city policies. The real problem won’t be solved until we raise taxes on corporations, slash the defense budget, and unplug the national security state. The real solution is to turn the United States into Denmark.

San Francisco has a defense budget?

San Francisco is just a shit hole in the middle of scenic beauty all because of liberal greed.

Left out of the article: San Fran is run by and for the Gays. Like the Joker once said:
“Decent people shouldn’t live here.”

Saw one of those dumps in Noe Valley. The sticker price was 1.1 million.

This guy is Exhibit Number 1 of Liberal entitlement thinking in California.

Since people like him and his buddies are morally and intellectually superior to all the rest of us (just ask them), they assume they’re entitled to live in splendor free of charge.

San Francisco, Marin, the beaches...it’s all supposed to be theirs, no questions asked.

Subsidized housing for Democrat voters, the Made Guy Gangsters of Modern America, rent control, make work government “jobs” and lavish pensions...the Progressive UberClass in California deserves it all.

But reality bites, doesn’t it? You let tens of millions of people into the country and they gotta live somewhere, and some actually have real jobs. Prices go up and....your little paradise gets priced out.

Oh Well, Morons. Guess you aren’t as special as you thought you were.

Exactly. While politicians generally avoid or exempt themselves from the results of their progressive policies, the rest are left holding the bag. Reality sucks for them.

I know it is an automatic impulse for conservatives, especially FReepers to go ballistic over the mention of San Fransicko, but the area does have some redeeming qualities.

My two brothers, twins, now 83, have lived most of their adult life near SF. One, a dermatologist, had a nice home in Mill Valley. His twin has a very nice condo in Pacifica, overlooking the ocean. The doctor now spends most of his time in his Paris apartment, but still goes back to SF frequently, as he has a son and daughter there.
In my visits there, I did see the bums sleeping on sidewalks and also encountered the decedent leftist, but if one divorces himself from the politics and debauchery of the city, it can be a nice place to visit, and a decent area to live in.
Don’t forget, even Savage lives there, hahaha.
