Antibiotics have transformed human health and saved millions of lives. Now, as a result of overuse, they are no longer working. The golden age of medicine has come to an end.
A decision is expected shortly on Midland Pig’s so-called Foston Mega Farm, which will house 25,000 intensively reared indoor pigs, making it one of the largest in Europe. The proposal has attracted huge opposition, with more than 20,000 letters from across the world. Pig welfare is, of course, an emotive issue. But campaigners insist that something greater is at stake here - something that the Chief Medical Officer has referred to as one of the greatest threats of the 21st century, alongside terrorism and climate change, and which this spring, is expected to be placed on the national risk register. Such farms rely on the use of antibiotics for sick animals, but as we rush to produce industrial quantities of ever cheaper food, we have sleepwalked into a human health crisis.
Antibiotics are no longer effective.
We stuff them into ourselves and our animals; we spray them on crops, dump them in rivers, and even – as emerged at a meeting of science ministers from the G8 last year - paint them on the hulls of boats to keep off barnacles.
Infections such as tuberculosis and septicaemia - the scourge of earlier centuries - are once again killing us at frightening rates. We have used, or are using, our so-called drugs of last resort. There is nothing left in the armoury

The day can’t be far off when the anti-biotics will be as useless on animals as they are on us. Then there will be rampant, out of control disease on these mega-farms. And even if we are lucky enough to stumble on a new anti-biotic, we will abuse and over use it also and render it useless.
“Profits first and damn the consequences, even to their own families. Had a tooth infection a few months ago. The dentist prescribed penicillin. It had always worked great on prior tooth infections. This time it had no effect whatsoever. Nothing. So the dentist prescribed a different class of anti-biotic. That one worked,,,just barely. It will probably be totally ineffective if I get (and in all likelihood I will) another tooth infection. Tooth infections can easily kill a person. I have bad teeth (the remaining ones), so even though they aren’t yet infected, I’m seriously considering having them all pulled.”
Abbesses in a tooth are most likely not in the tooth at all, but in the gum tissue. A direct injection of tetracycline into the pocket is the way to treat it. You can do this yourself if you can get the drug... Put one capsules worth into your water pick and go at it...

Antibiotics are RX’d for just about everything. In many contries you don’t even need an Rx, just go into the shop and lay down your cash. There is the idea that we need to protect everybody from everything all the time. Look around: Hand sanitizers, disinfectent wipes at the grocery store, etc. All the antibiotics and rest of the stuff do now is kill the weaker strains. The strong ones survive and pass the strength on to their next generation. To some degree we all suffer the result. I really believe that there is some truth to the Old Wive’s Saying: Unless a kid eats a peck of dirt before he’s five, he’ll be sickly his entire life! To be politically correct that should probably read he/she/it... In any case each individual needs to cope with the small stuff in order to develop the necessary anti-bodies to fend off the big stuff!
