The man was in his own home speaking to his girlfriend who evidently was taping the conversation. What was her motive for creating this firestorm?
I didn’t hear what he said, and if it’s racist, it is what it is. But what about taping a conversation and leaking it to the media. No one is talking about that. He never publicly stated any of this.

My son follows the NBA, and he says that this owner has been known to be a racist for years, that he has more than once been fined for racial discrimination in his real-estate dealings, and has made other racially-insensitive comments in the past. He wonders why this is all coming to a head NOW. My theory is that it’s in keeping with the recent Obama zeitgeist in which all speech not approved by (or spoken by) liberals is being marginalized, banned, and criminalized.
Why would anyone want to own a team in a sport that is primarily a “Negro League” with a relative handful of token whites? You just knew he’d have to step on his crank eventually. (Oops, I suppose that was racist, huh?)
Yeah, he’ll have to console himself with the fact that he’s only worth a measly two or three billion dollars. I sure feel sorry for him. (snicker)
IMHO, it's because the Clippers are actually a decent team now, while the Lakers suck. When the Clippers had as many followers as PMS/NBC, nobody really gave a rip. Now that they finally had a couple decent drafts and a coach with some cache, all the front-runner fans want to jump on their bandwagon.
Give it a year or two, until most of their talent blows town, and the team and the controversy will be forgotten... again!

It seems to me that she was trying to blackmail him. And that effort failed, so she took the tapes and went public with it to humiliate him.
No evidence of that yet, but, as this plays out, I think we’ll hear more about why in the heck she was taping conversations, and why the heck she would publicize them.

Clippers sucked until now. This is the first team that might have had a chance at the championship.
