Reporting from Donetsk, Ukraine — In a sign of the deepening destabilization of eastern Ukraine, the popular mayor of Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, was shot in the back on Monday, authorities said.

Mayor Gennady Kernes was in critical condition after undergoing surgery at a local clinic, said Dr. Valery Boiko, who performed the two-hour operation.

He was shot while jogging on the outskirts of Kharkiv at about noon, according to a statement posted on the city's website. A police report said he was cycling at the time.

“The doctors qualified the injury as heavy, given the damage to internal organs,” the city statement said.

The Interior Ministry said Kernes was the target of an assassination attempt.

Mayor is Jewish. My guess is this is another Russian attempt to paint the Ukrainian government in a bad light.

Been watching the news.

Haven’t seen any women among the Russian or Ukrainian forces.

How can either side hope to win when all they have is men wielding the weapons?

To anyone interested in the history of the Eastern Front and the mammoth battles that were fought there in World War ll, hearing familiar names like Sevastopol, Kharkov, Kiev and Kerch seems like falling asleep and awakening in a time warp.

I think we are in a time warp...the 1930's all over again or even the early 1900's. Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, The Kaiser, morons like Chamberlain and Roosevelt and worldwide financial instability. What could possibly go wrong. Obama??

Yeah, it's a time warp. As the battle was ending the headlines in Russian newspapers were, `The Tigers Are Burning!' KUrsk photo: Kursk Tiger KurskTiger.jpg The Rooskies took a lot of losses in that area but drove the Germans back. It may make me a `bootlicking Putinista' but we would be wise to remain cognizant of this history.

There were reports a couple days ago he was being “uncooperative” and the separatist vote wasn’t going to happen in Kharkiv on May 11. This assasination attemption fits in with a general escalation by Team KGB today across the region. There were shootings, IED assault, peaceful marchers attacked, etc. This is about to kickoff.

FYI there was an earlier posting
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3149459/posts
from The Kiev Post which named the mayor and described him as a supporter of the ousted PM. The publication asserted that the mayor appeared (my terms) wishy washy on a number of issues. The publication did not speculate on who the shooter was only that he was shot in the back and in the hospital.

When someone from a heretofore uninvolved player like Turkey assassinates the EuroMaiden Archduke for mistreating Muzzies things will really heat up.
