Weingarten's start as President of UFT was by appointment. From the
NYTimes:
"After joining the union staff, Ms. Weingarten, 40, a labor lawyer, got her teaching degree and began teaching social studies and American history at Clara Barton High School in Brooklyn. Since Ms. Feldman's elevation to the national presidency, Ms. Weingarten has taken over much of the union's day-to-day administration and has become the public spokeswoman for the union's causes.
To fill out Ms. Feldman's U.F.T. term, which ends on June 30, 1999, Ms. Weingarten must be elected by the union's 90-member executive board, union officials said. That year of incumbency would give her time to develop her leadership style, raise her public profile and cement her relationship with the rank and file before she would be forced to run in a general election before the union's 130,000 members."
Weingarten's current partner in sin is apparently a Jewish Rabbi (????)
