Minimum Wage Boost Blocked in Senate

A emocratic bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 was met with overwhelming Republican opposition in the Senate today, where it failed to garner the 60 votes needed to move past a key procedural hurdle.

The bill, which was introduced by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), would have raised the federal minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $10.10 per hour over the next 30 months, after which automatic annual increases in the minimum wage would be executed to account for inflation. Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee was the only Republican who voted in favor of letting a debate on the measure proceed; it failed by a margin of 54-42.

After the vote, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), tweeted, "Republicans just turned their backs on millions of hardworking Americans who deserve a fair shot. This debate is not over."

This was a show vote.

Republicans will cave before the election.

The least skilled are already being pushed out of jobs requiring the least skills, due to the shortage of jobs available for people with greater skills. A minimum wage of $10.10 will only make that issue worse and push even more of the least skilled individuals OUT of “minimum wage” jobs, as employers will pick more people now already earning the $10.10 because their greater skills can obtain it anyway. Why hire someone with the least skill level for $10.10 when people with greater skills are and will be available at $10.10? They won’t. Thus, the ranks of the permanently unemployed will just expand.

How exactly can the Republicans block anything in the Democrat majority Senate under the new rules?

I thought the POTUS said that he didn't need any of the peoples representatives, he will act with or without them, so go for it raise the minimum wage with an executive order, and why not raise it to $20, if $10.10 is good why not $20.10?

Yeah, nothing makes me happier than knowing this ditz-for-brains is part of our political process.

I hope that ink is absorbed into her brain and she forgets where her polling place is located..

Here’s one hardworking American telling Reid to shut up and drop dead with both middle fingers held up.

Our local commissary has four of these. It’s rare that all four are in operation. They still have a warm body because they check IDs even though the checkout scans those. The machines are always screwing up and need human intervention.

Much like Snowe and Collins were.

Already, at least 20% of young adults age 34 and less are still living with their parents. (I forget the actual percentage.)

Republicans should be hammering the Democrats on making entry-level jobs so costly to employers that they cannot hire unskilled workers. We need lower minimum wage, so employers can hire and unskilled workers can get experience.

Oooooooo....those Mean minority Republicans blocked this bill...they can do so much from their position of weakness!!

This story has all the feel of a 'mob crowd' complaining about the 98 pound weakling that got pounded by a bully, and then attacking the weakling for hurting and cutting up and bruising the bully's hands from him smashing them against the weakling's face...

That 10.10 means something to these Pagans...

I think I found it here “1010Global.org”.

There’s an article on FR from Horowitz about it.

The figure of ten dollars and ten cents an hour proves that the people pushing this don’t really believe their own rhetoric. If they did believe it then they would first realize that ten cents tacked on to the ten dollars is meaningless in the context of today’s prices. Ten cents an hour for an eight hour day would hardly buy a piece of candy. Secondly, if they really believed it they would be calling for a minimum of at least fifty dollars an hour if not more. If it works as they pretend to the benefit of everyone why stop with a lousy ten dollars and ten cents?
