Ask yourself why it would be in Russia’s interest to take over a bankrupt country it would have to finance from its own budget?
Ukrainians may be attracted to Russia’s welfare benefits but there is nothing else they like about Russia. And seriously, Russia doesn’t want to be the cow in that kind of relationship.
There is nothing to stop Russia from taking over Ukraine. Its just not an economically viable proposition.

Russia has always needed Ukraine for several reasons, land, access to the Black Sea...it’s the only reason Russia has killed and pillaged Ukraine. It’s why they wield the influence and the instigation in that country.
They occupy and destroy. Always have, and always will.
