Shapiro: We Live In An Era Where Private Views Can Ruin Your Career
Truth Revolt ^ | 5/1/14 | Paul Bois

Posted on 05/02/2014 7:17:54 AM PDT by Nachum

On Thursday, TruthRevolt Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro appeared on The Kelly File with Megyn Kelly to share his personal concerns about the possible slippery slope of the NBA slapping a lifetime ban on Clipper's owner Donald Sterling for racist views he expressed on an illegally obtained recording, rather than any racist actions he had taken.

"What we are seeing here is that thoughts matter significantly more than actions," said Shapiro, before highlighting prior lawsuits against Sterling alleging racial discrimination toward minorities. "Now he says the wrong thing and the NBA wants to oust him. So we live in an era, unfortunately, when public views and apparently private views that are taped by your girlfriend in the privacy of your own home are more important to the general public than the actions you take."

Kelly responded by suggesting the NBA, and for that matter the general public, ignored past allegations against Sterling on the basis they remained allegations that were either settled or dropped entirely. Shapiro rejected her assertion, saying that multiple lawsuits of racial discrimination should have been embarrassing enough for the NBA to drop Sterling. At least in those past cases, Shapiro implied, Sterling would have been punished for having acted in racist fashion.

He will fight the ex-girlfriend who clearly set him up, taking a picture with Magic Johnson and a girl doing gang signs before posting it on Instagram. Your mistress sets you up as a racist. And coincidentally, the guy in the photo she posted is one of the first to say “Hi, I’ve got backers for a billion dollars, I want to buy your team”. He’ll fight the conspiracy to steal the team from him.
The NBA won’t criticize Jay-Z wearing 5% nation medallions, players who father dozens of kids, but a guy who utters non-PC statements in private (to his black girlfriend, no less), that is the basis for being banned. Yet his legal losses for actual discrimination a half decade ago lead to nothing. Or, rather, his NAACP donations were sufficient penance.
He’s going to fight because it is a billion dollars, he has nothing else to do for the rest of his life, for injured pride of his black mistress’ betrayal, the hypocrisy of the NBA and the conspiracy by Magic Johnson to take the team.

I think the same thing. Liberals are always ignorant of The Law Of Unintended Consequences. There are numerous NBA affiliated people who have made racist statements or done racist things. Spike Lee and Jay-Z for example. Think the NBA will ban them? Not bloody likely. But prime fodder for a lawsuit by an aggrieved party.

Yes, but did Sterling know that his remarks would be going public? I’ve heard that Sterling had a lot of his statements recoreded. But it certainly sounds like his gold digging girl friend was setting him up. Magic Johnson was one of the people Sterling’s paramour was hanging around with, and now just out of the blue, he’s one of the people wanting to own the Clippers. Sounds fishy to me.

The swiftness of the action was probably incumbent on 2 things: growing unrest in the player ranks including threats of mass walkout, and the fact that Sterling’s race problem had been an open secret for a long time. Columns have been written about Sterling’s race relations for years and years, but for whatever reason they never gained any traction, so the league was “safe” to ignore it. Add to that the decades he was seemingly deliberately putting a second rate team on the court and it’s probable the league office had been contemplating getting rid of him for quite some time. The investigation probably consisted of double checking with the lawyers to see if their case was solid and checking with the other owners to make sure Silver would have the necessary backing.
