Experiments in animals have demonstrated this, decades ago. Animals *always* have some gut inflammation, but when the gut flora are wiped out with antibiotics, the inflammation disappears.

Without the constant vigilance of the immune system, those gut bacteria would consume our bodies. That is one reason a gut perforation is so dangerous.
