Russian separatists down 2 choppers, fighting spreads to Odessa as Ukraine teeters

Pro-Russian separatists shot down two helicopters in a key eastern Ukrainian city, and fighting in the port city of Odessa triggered a fire that killed dozens, as the embattled nation moved closer to the brink of civil war.

Interim Ukraine President Oleksandr Turchynov said "many" pro-Russia rebels have been killed, injured and arrested in a major offensive to regain control of Slavyansk, though it was not clear if the Kiev-backed forces had succeeded. Russia reacted angrily to the offensive by Ukrainian security forces, calling for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after a spokesman for President Vladimir Putin warned it "effectively destroyed the last hope for the implementation of the Geneva agreements."

In the Black Sea port city of Odessa, Ukraine's third-largest city, a fire that broke out in a trade union building amid clashes killed 31. Fighting there represented another ominous milestone in the conflict that threatens to become a full-blown civil war, as Odessa holds huge historic significance for Russians and Ukrainians alike.

Sorta like the votes made in the US congress under threat of the IRS and NSA?

That we discuss all the time?

It would be foolish for him to invade and set himself up as an occupier. Russia has support on the ground in Eastern Ukraine and all they need is weapons.

Ukraine government will fail eventually when the IMF rules start to bite.

Well 40 % of the parliament was afraid to show up that day, for one. And the ex president fled from machine gun fire and had to leave town.

Now that I think about it, what's "ridiculous" about a concept all Western legal systems have had in common for the past twelve hundred years or so?

Are you from some third world chithole or what?

There's a national security threat with the Russian specnaz hiding among the friendly civilians. I can't see an easy way of neutralizing specnaz, who's happy to use the civilians as human shields (and some civilians are happy with their role). Ukrainian army has been going out of its way to avoid casualties, they're actually getting ridiculed for this. Ideally, people of Donbas should make their own decision where they stand, Ukraine or Russia. But you can't have a fair plebiscite under a foreign military occupation, the way they had in Crimea. Given a fair referendum, Donbas would choose Ukraine. (on Crimea, I was 50-50%; but for Donbas it's almost certain the majority would go with Ukraine)

They knew they couldn't win the upcoming elections so they overthrew the government.

Yanukovich was polling lower than the nationalist Tyahnibok. Notice how Donbas cause today is not for Yanukovich but for federalization, separation, Russia, etc. Only way he would win the next election was if Ukraine was turned into Russia/Belarus (which he tried to do with his January dictator laws) but then...

The democratically elected Ukraine President wasn’t impeached, he was overthrown by a US backed group of radical fascists.

Maybe if you stopped imbibing the State Dept. brand horse manure for a minute you’d have a clue about what’s been happening.

And can you believe this group of radical fascists pushed Russia to the breaking point? I mean, to where Russia had to invade and occupy Crimea?

As of today Ukraine is finished. All that remains is the ending.

You can argue about snipers but a whole lot of unarmed people were burned alive and physically blocked from leaving a burning building. As they jumped to their deaths the crowd was laughing.

These are the kind of savages the US is aligned with.

It wasn’t ducked, it was ignored. Because it is a red herring, and anyone with half a brain can see it.

The Ukrainian Army is killing civilians.

The civilians are Ukrainian.

The Maidan crowd claim to be the government of the Ukraine.

The present government of the Ukraine has command the Ukrainian Army to kill Ukrainians.

If it's tough dealing with these alleged Specnaz then the SOBs that overthrew the government prefer murdering of civilians to tough decisions.

Straight forward, PERIOD.

Wait a day or two, the Kiev Kiddies will be saying the civilians were all Russian Special forces and the laughing was really an “ethnic Ukrainian” mourning chant.

It was ducked. you have half a brain and therefor saw something you couldn’t deal with like a thinking adult.

We see that just fine on this thread where you can’t answer questions and duck them, we see it on other threads where you can’t answer questions and duck them. you do try Rule 12ing everyone that backs you into a corner with the prowess of a seasoned liberal though. So there’s that.
