Russian separatists down 2 choppers, fighting spreads to Odessa as Ukraine teeters

Pro-Russian separatists shot down two helicopters in a key eastern Ukrainian city, and fighting in the port city of Odessa triggered a fire that killed dozens, as the embattled nation moved closer to the brink of civil war.

Interim Ukraine President Oleksandr Turchynov said "many" pro-Russia rebels have been killed, injured and arrested in a major offensive to regain control of Slavyansk, though it was not clear if the Kiev-backed forces had succeeded. Russia reacted angrily to the offensive by Ukrainian security forces, calling for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after a spokesman for President Vladimir Putin warned it "effectively destroyed the last hope for the implementation of the Geneva agreements."

In the Black Sea port city of Odessa, Ukraine's third-largest city, a fire that broke out in a trade union building amid clashes killed 31. Fighting there represented another ominous milestone in the conflict that threatens to become a full-blown civil war, as Odessa holds huge historic significance for Russians and Ukrainians alike.

Oh you mean like this? Maidan taking over Ukraine Gov. buildings

But not with guns. Occupy Wall Street protestors have used similar tactics stateside and been met without live ammo:

Wednesday night, demonstrators went on a rampage during the Occupy Oakland protests. A group of demonstrators took over a foreclosed building near City Hall, smashing windows and setting bonfires along the way. Riot police responded and protesters summarily began throwing Molotov cocktails, metal pipes and bricks at the cops, who responded with tear gas and non-lethal bullets.
And the OWS protestors weren't even protesting over laws that attempted to abolish freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. Russia has no right to foment civil disorder in Ukraine while trying to annex it. That's the heart of the matter.

Yup, a regular Mother Theresa that guy.

Then there’s the obvious point that when little things like collapsing economies is old hat, where does a bored Nazi collaborator go from there?

Overthrowing countries and revenge on those that ‘wronged’ him in the past might be a safe bet. People just refuse to let their minds accept the evil, the SHEER evil on the minds of liberals. And when you combine that level of evil with unlimited money, the current situation is what you get.

Putin outsmarted him. So he bankrolled the one country’s lib that could conceivably put the screws to Putin.

Unfortunately he got something different than his investment called for with Barry. Namely a support group every bit as Machiavellian as Soros himself. But far more incompetent.

He lost Egypt/Syria and now The Ukrainian mess is not going smoothly. Vlad may yet thwart him again, no thanks to Barry.

The balance of World power has been way out of whack since WW2. We have managed to keep a lid on a lot of it, but enough pressure can blow through any seal. The fallout of this will be dangerous. But liberal policies created power where power never should have been.

Actions have consequences.

And with that, it’s bedtime for Bonzo!

Sometimes I think I hear you calling my name. If you like would you please go to Ukraine and send us information. Now and then I think I hear the same?

Note also that elections are scheduled for the end of May. What’s Putin’s hurry? Why won’t he wait for the election results before deciding whether or not to annex Ukraine? Doesn’t he want to find out the will of the Ukrainian people?

Could it be that Putin can’t wait for the results of the Ukrainian elections, because they will put the lie to his claim that the Ukrainian government is composed of putschists who represent nobody but themselves?

"He understands the way the world works and is not afraid to wield power."

He also knows when to yawn and curl up in front of the fire like he's a nice old pet dog. If someone he knows he shouldn't challenge is elected the number of surprisingly helpful things he'll do will amaze people.

IOW, Putin is Russian, not Soviet but Russian. I don't know how you'd find out but he may well have been in a KGB clique that the KGB tried to purge from its ranks several times for being less Soviet than they were dedicated to returning Russia to it's former status as a Orthodox Russian State ruled by an autocrat and a force in European affairs.

I wish my memory wasn't shot, there was a good book about that out in the early eighties when the Soviet Union still looked like it was solid and only Reagan thought it would fall apart if put under pressure. It came out about the same time a book entitled, "Puzzle Palace" was out and people laughed at that book for warning that the NSA was destined to be more of a threat to US citizens than an aid in intelligence gathering.

Huh?

No I am quite serious. What I am saying is that places/power blocs were created like the EU that have helped lead to this mess. Then there is the muslim angle. throughout history Europe was fragmented because they could not get along. Suddenly forcing them under the EU banner gave liberals a lot of power and a lot of chaos was the result.

As independent states, they were a problem for each other but not so much the greater world. Today, most ‘people’ in the EU want a return to sovereignty but the libs in Brussels keep coming up with ways to keep them locked under their thumb. And the pressure builds.

They went into the Ukraine thing playing a dangerous game for the benefit of their power. It backfired.

To: caww; All

I am becoming very concerned about what is going on in Russia right now.

Russian officials have been VERY quiet since the Odessa Massacre went down. Even RT and RIANovosti, usually reliable sources for the latest official positions from Russia, have been very quiet. None of the usual blustering, even from Lavrov.

Meanwhile, the Russian twittersphere has exploded over the deaths, demanding action.

It is already after dawn in Ukraine, and no tweets about the renewed offensive that Avakov promised, either. Seems that Urainian troops did not “Perform as expected” yesterday.

Anyone else get the feeling that something big is about to happen??

Around noon Kiev will announce a couple more units that went East have been dis-banned?

Who knows, your guess is as good as mine.

“but he may well have been in a KGB clique that the KGB tried to purge from its ranks several times for being less Soviet than they were”

Putin was part of the “Andropov Levy”, a group of young recruits he personally took in to try and reform the KGB from the inside.

They ran afoul of the Chernyenko bunch. Because of this, he was never posted to anywhere “important” while in the KGB.

It's hard to get worked up about Soros's collaboration, when he was a member of a subhuman minority targeted for mass killings. They were pit bulls set against each other in the ring, a modern-day version of gladiatorial combat imposed by the nutty corporal who wanted an empire cleansed of subhuman subjects. I'm not a fan because he funds leftist causes, but things done in extremis don't really count.

Before and during WWII, a lot of people sided with the Nazis to get out from under Russian, French, Dutch or British rule. Many* of East Asia's post-war rulers sided with Imperial Japan during the war. They sided with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan for the same reason we sided with pitiless Russian mass murderers - the enemy of my enemy is at least my temporary ally.

* Nationalist China received large amounts of aid from Nazi Germany in its effort to crush the Chinese Communists. It had almost achieved its objective when Imperial Japan invaded, thereby saving Mao Zedong and his henchmen. Indonesia's Sukarno worked with Imperial Japan during the war and used the organizational skills and structures developed during the Japanese occupation to organize the revolt against Dutch rule in the post-war era that finally led to Indonesia's independence. Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew worked for Imperial Japan's propaganda department in what the Japanese renamed Syonan-to.
