CNN Cuts, Reassigns 50 Employees Across News, Digital Divisions

Producers have the chance to be rehired – at lower salaries

CNN cut or reduced 50 positions across multiple divisions on Thursday, changing roles and reducing positions and salaries across the board, a CNN executive told TheWrap.

“There is essentially no head count change,” a network executive wrote in an email. “Fifty positions have been impacted. Roles will [be] changed.”

CNN President Jeff Zucker met with newsroom reporters on Thursday to tell them the bad news, an insider told TheWrap. The cuts mainly affect news producers and managers, some of whom will be invited to reapply for new or “updated” positions at lower salaries.

The insider said Zucker's plan is to reduce packaged news stories to three or four per day and described the reaction in the newsroom as “shell-shocked.”

If it wasn’t for McDonalds, airports and doctors offices, CNN’s rating would be lower than MSNBC’s ratings.

Anderson Cooper 360 program is being renamed as Anderson Cooper 370, in deference to Maylasian Air 370

My newsroom experience taught me that anyone above Editor thinks the average reporter is a useful tool they can unleash on their ‘problems’ for financial/power gain. The average reporter on the other hand thinks they are part of the ‘elite’ because they get to go to events and rub elbows with ‘important people and carry out instructions on what to write, because they are TOLD what angle to take, unthinkingly.

Lastly, the ‘important people’ who are golf buddies with the management of the news org, think they can feed BS to the idiot reporters in the hopes of gaining some favor with the news org’s publishers and thus turn good press into profit/power.

It is “The circle of Stupid” because no one ever gets what they want and has to grovel before the other hoping to gain favor. Ultimately, when the business loses cred, the business downsizes, the reporters pack their desks with a dumbfounded look and go begging the people they once interviewed for a job, who are themselves usually in financial straits.

The looks on their faces when they realize that they are not, in fact, members of the ‘elite’ is one of my fondest memories from my time in the media.

Never once realizing they cut their own throats.

Get rid of Burnett, Crowley, and Cooper. Watch the ratings soar.

CNN has become the new MSNBC...

No surprise, with the ex head of NBC Entertainment as CNN CEO now, that set up MSNBC to be what is today.

“Get rid of Burnett, Crowley, and Cooper.”

Of the three, the one they don’t DARE to touch is cooper.

Too many PC points, and too many links to BIG liberal money.

“Maybe sponsors have finally caught on that virtually no one is watching CNN, after they’ve spent two months on the missing Malaysian plane.”

CNN showed up in Slovyansk today, and started doing live shots. How long has this already been going on for?

A CBS crew showed up in Lugansk at the same time today.

I don’t think that is a coincidence.

The market for liberal propaganda isn’t what it used to be now that people have a choice.

Every time I have switched to CNN, they have been discussing the missing plane with those who know noting or (less often) express shock over Sterling. Not one word about the IRS scandals.

They should do more liberal programming. Perhaps side with the admin more...

I like that - good idea. Would also like to see CNN hire more liberals and encourage them to 'attempt' to pretend they're objective. Gives 'em that nice phoney feel...

The problem CNN has is that they are far too conservative. The country is hard left. Has been since 2980 when Reagan stole the election.

If the bosses at CNN don’t realize their hard right programming is at the core of their financial woes, they need a new line of work. I mean come on. A 2 year old can figure this out. Advertizers can see the level of highly controversial programming on that network and they simply don’t want their products associated.

Why would people watch them? For the few thousand extremists, there’s Fox news. CNN can’t out fox Fox. They have to abandon that idea, fire everyone involved and go where the audience is. It worked for MSNBC. Their ratings are at an all time high since Maddow took command.

In sum, I think we can all agree that:

1: Fire anyone to the right of Bill Ayres
2: Institute litmus tests for basic news coverage using Democratic Underground for focus groups and rely wholly on their recommendations.
3: Go where the eyeballs are. Leftist programming has dominated radio and it will dominate television if some forward looking CNN exec has the guts to ever try it.

It is that simple.

You're right Norm - it's that simple. If CNN would take your advice they would be back on top in no time. I fear some of their usual advisers are offering somewhat similar advice but you've said it far better than anyone. Your logic is impeccable... Norm, I see a job at CNN in your future...
