Iran will target U.S. aircraft carriers based in the Persian Gulf if a war were to ever erupt between both countries, an Iranian naval chief warned Tuesday.
"Aircraft carriers are the symbol of America's military might," Adm. Ali Fadavi, according to the Fars news agency. "The carriers are responsible for supplying America's air power. So, it's natural that we want to sink the carriers."

SSBNs and SSNs cannot project as much power ashore as a CVN does, not without going nuclear. A dozen or so vertical launch Tomahawks, plus part of the torpedo room’s storage, just cannot compare to the payload a carrier air wing delivers. Even our SSGNs, with perhaps 154 missiles, are too expensive to use in most power projection missions beyond disabling air defenses, when compared to the cost of a carrier strike. We really do need the carriers.
Fortunately, our fleet is busily engaged in diversity training, learning how to embrace their GLBQT bunkmates, so there is no question of their priorities or their readiness to handle Obama’s orders.

It's not just firepower either. A submarine cannot deny an area to an enemy. Sure, they can sink a few ships, but a sub simply doesn't have the variability of force to stop the enemy from flying aircraft, moving ground forces, etc. in an area. A submarine's ideal fighting state is not being seen. If you know a sub is in your area, is that going to stop you from building a landing strip, from moving a tank column through? Will the sub even notice the activity? Can it (without revealing itself)? A sub's defense is stealth. Once that's gone, it's pretty vulnerable to counterattack.
But to the original article, and like everyone else has said, DUH. Ever hear of Pearl Harbor, Midway, most major WWII sea battles? What were the main targets? Carriers. Yes, Pearl raped our Battleship fleet, but that's not what the Japs wanted. They were hoping to have a carrier or two in port, because they are what can do the most in a fight.

The mullahs are responsible for supplying Iran’s hot air. So, it’s natural that we want to “sink” the bastards.

Duh! The last world war was a Carrier war, the next world war will be a Submarine war (with plenty of missiles)!

“This is news? No, just common sense.”
Think of the millions upon millions of Americans who have no common sense. It is for them that the article is written.
