After more than 30 years in law enforcement, Mark Donka says he cant remember a single instance in which a firearm was involved in a domestic dispute.
And the statistics mirror Donkas experience: gun crime is rare in Vermont.
But that hasnt stopped an on-going effort in Montpelier to confiscate guns from alleged domestic abusers.
To hear the Vermont Network Against Domestic & Sexual Violence tell it, Vermonts domestic violence problem has become so serious the time has come for police to confiscate weapons from alleged domestic abusers. The group is the chief proponent of H.735, a must pass fees bill that mandates the seizure and storage of guns and ammo in domestic abuse cases. On Friday the Senate easily passed H.735 by a vote of 21-6.
Donka is one of many observers questioning the controversial legislation.

A common one "You can get them back when a court orders us to return them."
The Minnesota bill was amended to render it toothless. Third party storage was required to be offered, with time to do it.
Gun grabbers never miss a chance to lie about guns in order to scare the legislature into “doing something” about the “epidemic” of gun violence.
The temporary confiscation is already being done.
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA ) started this non-sense.
I have to look up the details after work.
An unintended consequence is that all weapons are removed from the house after a domestic incident, including those owned by the victim which essentially removes the right to self defense by a gun for the actual victim.
Of course domestic abuse gun confiscation makes sense for gun grabbers. It is one crime which anyone can be accused of and a crime regardless of facts, a trial, or conviction. An accusation is all that is required by a jaded ex and you are guilty with zero recourse. Goodbye guns.
