In any sane world this would cause an armed revolution, but even the GOP in Congress cannot avoid the implications of this.

The IRS in 1972 was not a partisan nest. It was staffed by professional civil servants whose politics rarely if ever influenced their job. Nixon’s knew this and knew he would have to have SecTres. ask to have this done. Barky’s salvation is that the IRS, indeed most of the federal bureaucracy is filled with partisan hacks who needed no direct order from 1600. There was a Nixon smoking gun but Barky could just sit back and relax, confident in the knowledge things would be done without dirtying his hands.
