RIYADH: A Saudi court sentenced Raef Badawi, the founder of a human rights group, to 10 years in jail and 1,000 lashes Wednesday over "insulting Islam," an activist said.
Badawi, who has been behind bars since June 2012, has also been ordered to pay a fine of one million riyals ($266,666/191,846 euros), said the head of the network, Suad al-Shamari.
"He is a prisoner of conscience," said Badawi, pointing out that there is "no criminal charge against him."
The ruling is unjust," she told AFP.
Badawi was sentenced in July 2013 to more than seven years in jail, in addition to 600 lashes, for insulting Islam, the religion of the ultra-conservative kingdom.
Concretely, he had criticised the role of the notorious religious police. . .

that’s gonna leave a mark
Jewish law only allows 40 lashes...
The ancient Romans considered 40 lashes to be fatal which is why the Apostle Paul received “40 minus one” on several occasions.
1000 lashes is a death sentence.
That would work here-liberals.
Probably given over a period of time. Just a guess.
Isn’t 1000 lashes a death penalty? It is certainly cruel and unusual punishment.
To do otherwise would be fatal....and render the corpse as burger.
It can be, depending on the dosage and the frequency. Or not. The prisoner is completely at the mercy of the state, knows he will suffer, and that it will be repeated, each time potentially fatal and every time agony. That is how such a prisoner of conscience is broken and forced to submit to the state, because if he isn't and doesn't, he dies. This is not simply corporal punishment. Nor is it, in any sense, justice.
Another culture’s liberals... enemies of my enemy.
Liberals in Islam are Christians’ friends, same as secularists in Islam are. Only a foolish conservative would root against liberals in Islamic countries.
Disgusting country.
The King and his thugs should get flayed to death.
cruel and unusual punishment.
Did I miss the UN’s protest????
Donald Sterling: Delay, delay, delay...gee, who predicted that?
Looks like he’d get royally hosed on taxes; less to contribute to RATS:
New Sterling recording
The whole thing is a mess. And in the end, nothing will be done. His wife will run the team, no way they’re selling and taking the tax hit(s).
Like I said, Silver’s speech was just that - a speech meant to quell the NBA’s core constituency.
Disgusting indeed, fortunately this court’s ruling isn’t the final say. He may win on appeal.
