Salversan 606 was used to cure syphilis prior to penicillin's use. There have been some medical professionals advocating the reuse of the silver based antibiotic because resistance to it is rare. It does have some side effects and complications though.

Isn’t that the stuff that can potentially turn you blue?

‘Yeah, take this for your syphilis, you might turn blue. Don’t take it and you might DIE’.

Tough choice there if you’ve got a resistant strain.

Money might be had in figuring out how to prevent or reverse the blue though.

I think there was a treatment involving mercury in those days also.
