Report: Netanyahu Promises Talmud Will Be Israeli Law

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu reportedly revealed at a Likud conference on Wednesday some remarkable facets of the Basic Law he submitted last Thursday, which would enshrine Israel's status as the nation-state of the Jewish people.

Netanyahu told the head of Likud's hareidi division Yaakov Vider at the conference that he intends to make the Hebrew calendar, which is based on Jewish law, the official calendar of Israel, reports Kikar Hashabat.

The new law also would establish the Talmud, the core work of Jewish law, as an official basis for Israeli state law.

"I'm going to personally be involved in the law defining the state of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people," Netanyahu reportedly told Vider. "It's a very important law that will influence how Israel will look in the future."

"I want to anchor in this law, that it will be a Basic Law that the state of Israel arose and exists on the basis of the Torah and the Jewish tradition," Netanyahu explained, promising to define the Hebrew calendar as the official state calendar.

Netanyahu also promised that "we will define in the law the Gemara as a basis for the Israeli legal system," referencing the Jewish legal text analyzing the Mishnah, a legal work of the Jewish sages, which together form the Talmud.

Discussing the new Basic Law on Sunday in a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu stated "the existence of the State of Israel as a Jewish state does not actualize itself enough in our Basic Laws, which is what the proposed law aims to fix."

Netanyahu stressed the law would not restrict the rights of non-Jewish citizens of Israel. He further dismissed opposition to the law by leftist MKs, foremost among them Justice Minister Tzipi Livni who pledged to block the law.

"They want a Palestinian national state to be built beside us, and to turn the State of Israel, meanwhile, into a bi-national state, Jewish-Arab, within our restricted borders," Netanyahu argued, saying the new Basic Law would prevent such a situation.

I love it!

Israel has always turned to the Lord when things got bad, so this is nothing new. I wonder what effect that will have on Tel Aviv's being the most gay friendly city in the world and the latest abortion laws. They (acceptance of homosexuality and abortion) must go!

Why is this any different than an Islamic state saying Sharia is the basis of their law?

I think he’s talking about basing the laws on the Talmud, the rabbinical interpretation of the Old Testament laws. Not exactly the Law as written in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. And neither the Old Testament nor the Talmud order forced conversions, stoning of people of other faiths, female genital mutilation... If none of these are enough for you, the Jewish Law comes directly from God, the Koran... well, we all know!

This wrong! Israel’s constitution and legal framework should be rooted in the Torah and Halachah.

The Talmud is the interpretative analysis and commentary of the Jewish law. Not the same thing. The Mishnah is a digest of the laws and the Gemara explains their meaning.

I would like to see the Jewish philosophy and values embodied in a Basic Law. But I don’t expect that to happen in my generation.

The Torah is the written law. The Talmud is the oral law.

Its simple. If you in the look in the Torah, it lists the laws. But it does not define what they are or instruct people in how to observe them.

The only answer as Jewish tradition observes, is that Moses brought with him oral instructions on how to apply the written law that was not put down on paper.

If you stop to think about it, this is how ALL legal systems work.

The Torah is the written law Agree!

The Talmud is the oral law Partly correct. The Talmud is made up of the Mishnah, the oral law, and the Gemara, the rabbinical interpretations on both the written and oral law. The term Talmud can be used to refer either to the Gemara alone, or the Mishnah and Gemara together. But I don't believe it is used only for the Mishnah.

Moses brought with him oral instructions on how to apply the written law I don't know how much oral law Moses brought down from Mt. Sinai, but it is a historical fact that rabbis met for decades to compile the Talmud.

When, not if, but when activists start construction of the Third Temple, this will cause a major disturbance in the force, by which I mean the spirit of the world (1 Cor 2:12). This will be resisted by Jews, who know that when the Temple is completed, Torah places requirements on them to resume sacrifices. It will absolutely electrify the followers of the moon god into a frenzy. It will usher in the final desperate attempt by Satan to rule humanity. It is a predicate for the Messiah.

I wonder how many Christians who sing Handel’s Messiah at Xmas time, haven’t really listened to the words or thought it was a song about a literally true future event.

All that is true. I wonder how many Christians who sing Handel’s Messiah believe in a pre-trib Rapture! It is so much like a pregnancy in the last few weeks; some women are very well aware of what’s coming on, others are just enjoying their pregnancies. But for all, there’s only one way out: labor. And, no matter how hard the labor, it is always well worth it!

I was under the impression the Hebrew calendar was an official, not necessarily the only, calendar in Israel. Even secular holidays like Independence Day (5 Iyar), Holocaust Day (27 Nisan), and John Kerry's favorite, Jerusalem reunification day (28), are based on Hebrew, not Gregorian dates. Obviously in personal or business life one can use what they wish, but Hebrew dates are legally acceptable. From a practical standpoint I'm not sure this means much, laws could be passed based on the Torah or Talmud today. And it can easily be demonstrated by Moses and the Ten Comandments in the Supreme Court. In the context of establishing Israel as a Jewish state, it's obviously important. Mostly in giving the rest of the world something else to scream about. And it won't be just from the Muslim world. I'll speculate that some of the several dozen Christian nations will complain as well.

And Obama and Kerry will weigh in, though not only against Israel.

One of the ways this can be determined to be a completely bogus story.

It's so outlandish, Netanyahu will likely just chuckle and not draw attention to it by denying it.

That will happen, as Paul describes in the 11th chapter of Romans. I love verse 24: “For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?”
