More bad news on the employment front

Working age population way up. Actual number of people working down.

Applications for U.S. unemployment aid fell this week to 319,000. Last week the number was 344,000. Now you might think that’s good news, but it’s not. What matters when you look at this number is the rolling four-week average, which the Labor Department says is up 4,500. That means we’re still looking at about 325,000 people a week filing for unemployment claims.

When you’re supposed to be in a recovery, you don’t have anywhere near that number filing for unemployment. But a real recovery doesn’t see quarters of 0.1 GDP growth like the one we just had.

Now the Obama Administration is trying to blame the snow, which is a curious thing to say in the same week when they also tried to tell us global warming is lurking at our door.

But it also doesn’t wash because they trend far predates the one harsh winter we just had. Since 2007, the U.S. population has added more than 8 million people to the working age population. But in that same period, the total number of people working is down by a half million.

You can’t blame the snow for that. Maybe they could blame . . . George W. Bush!

Or maybe they could realize that their own policies – from taxes to regulation to ObamaCare to massive deficit spending – are hindering economic growth and hampering the process of job creation. Then again, if your agenda is the expansion of government and not private sector wealth creation, why would you care?

4 week average of 325,000 new unemployment claims——followed by 288,000 new jobs.

1,300,000 new unemployed——minus 288,000 new jobs.

We are still in the negative for 1,012,000 jobs.

Anyone got different math???

The author assumes obama and his ilk want the country to recover.

Their words say they do.

But every single action they’ve taken says they don’t.

What galls me is that he and his ilk totally ignore the amount of jobs LOST on his watch. If you check out the number of people working - and ignore the lies of the unemployment rate - he is in NEGATIVE territory

Blame technology and off-shoring.

Jobs are also going to machines:

Phone menus instead of real people.

Voicemail and MS Word instead of secretaries and typists.

Self-serve checkouts instead of cashiers.

ATM’s instead of bank tellers.

Ships are about to be sent across the ocean without crews.

The list goes on and on, and increases every year.

People are being eliminated from the workforce or commoditized.

You think homo sapiens existed by languishing for almost two hundred thousand years waiting for iPhones and other life-complicating crap to finally be invented?

What lovers of technology don't realize, is that there is a hidden price for their technology toys, which is increasingly destroying their livelihood and then their freedom.

Yes, most going on unemployment are replaced in the job they are leaving. Separately, the 288,888 number is the net increase in jobs. There are x# of new jobs offest by y# of positions eleminated which equals the net new or lost jobs.

If 1 million people a month were being laid off, than it would be a front page story.

And that's what's also happening in corners of the IT industry, too. What used to be hands-on site support is subbed out to a third-party vendor. Third-party vendor support is being eliminated by sub-contracting to remote online support halfway around the world. Hardware costs have come down to a point where lifecycle considerations aren't as much of a factor when it comes to repair/replacement; if it's in warranty, box it up and send it back (no certified tech onsite needed); it it's out of warranty, pitch it on the pile and deploy a new one from the bulk purchase made a year earlier. Have an employee give network admin the MAC address and two hours, and it gets imaged remotely - no onsite necessary for that, either. The front line who used to keep the place humming along is obsolete now, unless they can also configure routers, pull and terminate cable, update the phones, know your way around Active Directory, set up teleconferencing, and mop the bathroom floors, as well. The line between desktop and network support has blurred to the point of disappearing. Now you either do it all, or get paid like a McDonald's shift manager, assuming they even need you there at all.
