Lies, Damn Lies, and Research Studies

We live in an era of unprecedented BS. It’s coming at you live from every corner of life. Not just from your Twitter feed, the government, the media, and those crazy cats in Hollywood. It’s coming at you from scientists in the form of misinterpreted studies, flawed research, and opinion dressed up as science.

I just finished reading a blockbuster Wall Street Journal article about how ( saturated fat does not cause heart disease.). That’s right, folks. All those fat-free, heart-healthy diets backed by the American Heart Association and everyone else are bogus.) It seems the entire “saturated fat is bad” kick that that changed all the food we buy and the way we eat was the result of a botched study by one very influential – and very persuasive – scientist from Minnesota, Dr. Ancel Benjamin Keys.

Besides changing the diet of an entire nation for no apparent reason, the shift away from animal fat seems to have led to all sorts of unintended consequences that may have actually increased our risk of heart disease, especially for women. Hard to believe.

Thanks for posting.

Not to be a party-pooper, but I know of no particular reason why this study should be automatically assumed to be entirely accurate, relative to the older ones, simply because it is more recent.

If I remember correctly, coffee has been through at least two cycles of bad-good-bad-good in recent decades. Same is true of wine and alcohol in general.

The key to research is repeatability.

.......propping up Obama again?

They were pantsed over the East Anglia e-mails that totally stripped them naked over their conspiring and lying.

Is there no penalty for this? Someone needs to grow a pair and start stripping other people's tenure.

Being a Communist conspirator means never having to say you're sorry.

Well, maybe there is something to be learned in these cycles. Ignore scientific studies.

As side notes, you still need to shop your fats and oils carefully.

1) Most retail lards are hydrogenated, but you can get some that are not, and are much better for it.

2) Unrefined, 100% expeller pressed corn oil is less processed than most corn oil, so contains more Omega oils and no preservative like TBHQ.

3) The best olive oil is pure Italian oil, not blended with other olive oils from hither and yon. It costs more, but in flavor alone it is worth it.

4) Pork and bacon fat are far tastier than the lard or tallow from store bought beef. So for example, if you make homemade salami, you should use low fat beef augmented with pork or bacon fat.

Certainly ignore. Just as long as we all pay for them. That is the important issue.

I think the main point is that the conclusions touted from the old studies were actually contrary to the data in those studies. It’s not that the pendulum of findings has been swinging back and forth, but that the anti-fat conclusions were falsely based to start with.

Because science has been politicized like every thing else.
I don't believe anything coming from a government agency.
