U.S. retail sales growth slowed in April, with consumers shopping less online and cutting back on purchases of furniture and electronics.
The Commerce Department says retail sales rose just 0.1 percent last month, after surging 1.5 percent in March following a harsh winter that had curtailed shopping.
The modest sales suggest that consumers continue to be cautious during the still-slow, nearly 5-year recovery.

If the government statisticians couldn’t fudge the data any more than this the real numbers must have been horrible.

When you take everyone’s money for taxes, they have nothing left to spend on anything else.

Just paid my health insurance premium NO money left to buy any goodies now! Well, then there's that high medical deductible. $5k deductible means $2.50/hr of take home pay to set aside for medical treatment before Obamacare kicks in.
Whoops, my bad. Don't get to $5k until the end of the year. Better make that $5/hr of take home pay set aside and pray you don't need medical care until July.
Invest in Ramen.
here's the arithmatic:
40 hr/wk x 50 weeks = 2000 hrs.
$5k deduct/2000 hrs = $2.50 per hour
that's cash money
