Read: Colossians 1:15-23
Human beings straddle visible and invisible realitiesthe natural and the supernatural. I thought about these two worlds when I went out in a boat to watch whales off the coast of New Zealand. A whale would rest on the surface for a while, then breathe deeply a few times, his exhalations creating a spectacular spout, before plunging a mile deep to feed on squid.
Despite having its own lively habitat of marine plants and sea creatures, the whale must surface for oxygen from time to time or it dies. Though it knows little about the world above, it needs vital contact with it to survive.
I sometimes feel like that whale, coming up for spiritual air at regular intervals to stay alive. But there is no neat division between the natural and the supernatural. The world we live in is not an either/or world. What I do as a Christianpraying, worshiping, demonstrating Gods love to the sick, needy, and imprisonedis both supernatural and natural.
The same God who created the world thats visible to us actively sustains it and has made a way for us to approach Him, the invisible. Paul wrote, You, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death (Col. 1:21-22).
All our actions take place in the visible world, which we can touch, smell, and see. Yet the Creator and Sustainer of all things has provided a way for us to breathe the spiritual air we need and crave.
Gods throne is always accessible to His children.
Some skeptics have cited Colossians 1:15 to argue for Jesus being a created being: He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. But in the Jewish mind firstborn did not primarily refer to birth order. Instead, it meant the preeminence of the firstborn male over the family property. Clearly, Paul is emphasizing the preeminence of Christ.

My son called from Marine Camp Pendleton, where he has been taking his post boot camp infantry training before MOS school. They were evacuated to the south end, where the Crucible area and Reaper hill have been burned. He drove me all around there when he reported on the 22nd of April, and I recognized it from the news pictures. Pendleton is mostly wilderness, and it’s heartbreaking to see all that beautiful land burn, and moreso because the fire was deliberately set. I was going to go down there Tuesday for his graduation, but they will just get their certificates before being put on the bus for N.C.

Pictured above is a fellow named Floyd Sneed. I discovered him in 1968 and he had a profound effect on my early drumming career. He had hard rock chops, pop flash and a funky soul groove that was righteous. He was a large Canadian Afro-American with an athletic physic, chiseled like a professional weight lifter; he was partial to wearing bib overalls with no shirt and he played the first set of Zilco clear plexi-glass drums the world had ever seen. He also happened to be a founding member of the Three Dog Night backing band along with Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards, Joe Schermie on bass guitar and Mike Allsup on lead guitar.
Floyd Sneed was what we drummers call a "monster" and I learned a lot listening to him. When singers Danny Hutton, Cory Wells and Chuck Negron formed Thee Dog Night in 1968 they recruited Greenspoon and Schermie and landed a recording contract with ABC/Dunhill Records. One night, Joe Schermie was walking down the Sunset Strip and heard a band in one of the clubs and he spent his last dollar to go inside to see who the drummers were. Once inside, he was amazed to find the "drummers" turned out to be the powerhouse Floyd Sneed. He immediately asked him to join Three Dog Night and Floyd was the cornerstone of the group until 1984.
Hutton, Wells and Negron relied heavily upon young professional songwriters and cover tunes for their material. Outside of the Monkees, they had the largest stable of writers who would go on to become household names including Paul Williams, Hoyt Axton, Laura Nyro, Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Neil Young, Tim Hardin, Dave Loggins, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, Paul Rodgers, Jesse Colin Young, Russ Ballard, John Hiatt, Allen Toussaint and Leo Sayer. Between 1969 and 1975, the band scored 21 Billboard Top 40 hits with three number ones.
Sidenote: An early 3DN cover of a Traffic song written by Jim Capaldi, Steve Winwood & Chris Wood.

Sidenote: Written by Harry Nilsson, this song from their debut album with Chuck Negron on lead vocal reached number 5 on the Billboard charts. Nilsson wrote the song after calling someone and getting a busy signal. He stayed on the line listening to the "beep, beep, beep, beep..." tone, while writing the song. The busy signal became the opening notes of the song. Floyd Sneed's use of off-beat cymbal eighth notes on the chorus' was unique to pop music of the era and drummers the world over hit the woodshed to develop the coordinated independence required to play the groove. Off-beat eighth notes remain a staple of every drummers bag of tricks. Thanks Floyd.

Sidenote: Written by Neil Young it was his first solo single, written while Buffalo Springfield was in its last throes. The widely held assumption is that the song was written about Stephen Stills, who covered the song on his 1976 album Illegal Stills. Nils Lofgren also covered the song on his tribute album The Loner - Nils Sings Neil in 2008.

Sidenote: Written by Jimmy Campbell, Reg Connelly and Harry M. Woods, and recorded initially in 1932 by the Ray Noble Orchestra with vocals by Val Rosing, it was also notably covered by both Ruth Etting and Bing Crosby in 1933. Since then, the song has been covered hundreds of times by the likes of Jimmy Durante, Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, Rod Stewart, Frankie Laine, Percy Sledge, Earl Grant, Al Jarreau, Sheena Easton, Nina Simone, Etta James and Tina Turner to name a few. The most popular was an entirely new form recorded by soul artist Otis Redding in 1966. Redding was backed by Booker T. & the M.G.'s and Stax staff producer Isaac Hayes. Two years later, Three Dog Night adopted Redding's version for their debut album and the song peaked at #29 on the Billboard Top 100.

Sidenote: Credited to Robbie Robertson of The Band, the opening is a Garth Hudson invention based on Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" with nonsense lyrics originally improvised by Levon Helm and Richard Manuel. It was from The Band's first album without Bob Dylan, Music from Big Pink, but was popularized on Three Dog Night's debut in 1968. The Band opened their set at Woodstock in August of 1969 with the song, but at the time many people assumed they were covering a Three Dog Night song. It was a staple of 3DN live shows in 1969 when they were Steppenwolf's opening act and a showcase for organist Jimmy Greenspoon.

Sidenote: Composed by Galt MacDermot, James Rado & Gerome Ragni for the rock musical "Hair", Three Dog Night covered and popularized the song on their second album Suitable for Framing in 1969. It rocketed to #2 on the Canadian Singles Chart and #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
The album contains the top 20 hit singles "Easy to Be Hard", "Eli's Coming", and "Celebrate"; the latter of which (along with the album's opening track "Feelin' Alright") featured the fledgling Chicago Transit Authority horn section. It was also notable for being the first album by Three Dog Night to include songs written by band members, and for its inclusion of the Elton John song "Lady Samantha," as Elton John would not become widely known in the United States until 1970.
Suitable for Framing was well received in North America, reaching the top 10 on the main albums charts in Canada and the United States and became certified gold by the RIAA by the end of the year.
