SEOUL, May 18 (Yonhap) -- An apartment building under construction in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang has collapsed, causing an unspecified number of casualties, the state media reported Sunday.
The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the accident occurred in the Pyongchon District on May 13 as "the construction of an apartment house was not done properly, and officials supervised and controlled it in an irresponsible manner."
The KCNA reported that a "state emergency mechanism" was formed to rescue survivors and treat the wounded, and senior officials met with bereaved families and citizens in the district to express "deep consolation and (issue an) apology."

Rebar? We don’t need no stinking rebar!
These guys probably forgot to use rebar.
Ping
Heads will roll - literally.
I think somebody’s head will roll for this LITERALLY.
The only question is which method will the construction workers will be executed with: Mortar Fire, Flamethrower.....
You beat me by about 20 seconds.
Get out the flame-throwers.
And pretty much all of their relatives.
Beams? What are beams?? Those things that run counter to the bar joists? Hah! Dear Leader needed those for the new glorious Dear Leader palace. We the peasants need not such extravagances.
They might have gotten away with using straw to reinforce the masonry ... however, the people have had the audacity to have consumed all available supplies of straw, grass and bark.
Wow...a 23 story apartment building....
Must be many lives lost....
I remember a story a few months ago where one of the dip sh&t dictator aquariums collapsed in a building at one of his palaces...
Maybe if they stop using slave labor to build structures they might actually not collapse...
I believe that was in China, not North Korea.
“It is rare for the state media to reveal facts about an accident that took place inside the reclusive country and for high-ranking officials to issue an official apology.”
The cynic in me suspects this is an effort by the Norks to garner a bit of sympathy and as if to say, “See, we care about our people just like the South Koreans who are mourning the loss of hundreds of high school children because the ferry sank”. On the other hand, it might also be detrimental to the Norks to admit corruption and mis-management which reflects on Kim Jong Un’s leadership is very much like the corruption, mis-management and greed that led to the ferry sinking.
I didn’t take it that way. I thought you were referring to Jong Un’s daddy, Jong Il. There was nothing in the article to suggest the analogy you mention. Good point, though.
1. Tied to a post in the middle of a field for some artillery practice.
2. Dog Chow for a pack of ravenous dogs. 3. Quality control checker of the receiving end of a flame thrower.
