Savage Hemorrhages Hannity’s Audience: New York’s WABC Loses 50%, Chicago Down 59%

It’s the kind of conservative media story only conservatives understand.

The latest numbers are out for Michael Savage’s radio show. Recall that Savage was a key player in the battle between Sean Hannity and Cumulus radio. A battle that had an exasperated Hannity finally firing Cumulus, as reported here in NewsBusters at the time. But not before Savage, whom Cumulus had in the wings to replace Hannity in the latter’s Cumulus slots, took shots at Hannity, gloating at taking Hannity’s slot.

The Savage numbers tell a revealing tale of conservatism in the media. So let’s start with the brand new numbers themselves, numbers supplied by Nielsen Audio. They are the numbers for April – last month -, and cover 52 of America’s major radio markets. We will directly compare them here with Sean Hannity’s last numbers before being replaced on Cumulus stations - which is to say Hannity’s numbers for December, 2013. The percentages cited – again, these are from Nielsen Audio (formerly known as Arbitron) – are nothing if not startling.

Now, WHEN I listen, it’s to find out how much of what I know is going on he won’t have the courage to mention.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

My feelings exactly! I get tons more news and information from the Internet in about 1/10th of the time.

And....I, too, now KNOW how much Rush and the rest are too cowardly to report. Obama’s eligibility permanently soured me on talk radio and Fox. I will never forgive them. ( Not that any of them care as their wealth expands to match the size of their egos.)

Dupree who deflates every point Sean tries to make.

Well said. That's exactly what he does.

Sean used to be a lot better. I don't know why he went to the banter format. Another talk host told me it's because it's easier to fill the time that way.

But that's no excuse for Hannity, who like Rush has more than enough resources to hire people to work behind the scenes to help him prepare a good show that he can then deliver on his own.

If something borders on a scam, it’s at least one degree of separation from an actual scam.

Add this to the fact that both quotes you give are exaggerations, it seems the commercials are likely no more scams than those heard anywhere else.

I listen to Medved almost every day, but he’s been saying some mean things about Ted Cruz lately.

Rush sold out twenty years ago, when he stopped doing all the spoofs and cutting edge things that had liberals howling.

Right you are. Rush dropped the clever, funny, and biting satires and replaced them with hour-long monologues. At work, we used to talk about his spoofs. We don't talk about his monologues.

Rush is still is asset to the conservative cause. But he lost me as a listener a long time ago.

Savage is just a bitter human being and a typical whiny New Yorker. He doesn’t need a radio show. He needs professional help. As for Hannity he needs to eliminate talking with his crew and his daily segment with Jamie Dupree, the so-called most connected man in Washington. The guy never says anything provocative and you can tell he tries to play both sides of the political fence. That’s boring radio and establishment all the way. Sean’s lost his edge and he needs to be a solo host and ditch the hangers-on that are dragging him down.

Beck’s sidekicks do a very good show when Beck is away. They are very funny when on their own.

I do not get Roy Masters. Help me. What is so great about this guy?

I don’t think we get him in my market in any case. Salem used to have him in the middle of the night but their signal is too weak to reach downtown Everett.

he’s well prepared, and he gives out interesting info.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Rush gives out stuff that is **safe**!

Even to this day he uses the words “Marxists” or “communist” very rarely....yet...that is what they are. Marxists, communists, and fascists.

But why then are "normal" commercials missing from most conservative talk radio? That's what puzzles me. Are mainstream companies that afraid of a liberal backlash? Or is something else going on here?

I can’t remember hearing them without him there. I’ll try to catch it when he’s away.

Savage is so bad sometimes I think you can make a case for him being a leftwing plant to make conservatives look bad. I will take your word that the show was better when it was local.
I don’t believe he ever offered a satisfactory explanation for those unfortunate political donations a few years back.
Are you aware that the nasty feud he has with Mark Levin is heating up again?

Speaking of the old Rush that I knew so well, it was never about cowardice, it was about moving the nation right.

Rush always wanted to have a vast audience that he was prodding and educating, and largely, unlocking their inner conservative and giving them the language and arguments, for what they already believed, whether they knew it or not.

Rush was about his listeners being able to persuade at the office water cooler, he wasn’t there to express his inner, angry, radical self.

I used to listen to Rush to help me sound less dogmatic, less blunt, less of a fact filled dump machine for any poor soul that I could corner.

Rush was about changing people and emboldening the middle class to have confidence in their values and common sense, not to sing songs and share red meat with we die hard right wingers.

I don’t ever listen to Hannity anymore but I kind of like Savage. I think he’s funny.

I look at it as primarily entertainment anyway.

Rush did use to be better. I liked the old "updates" and the theme songs -- "Back in the Saddle Again" and "You Don't Own Me" especially. He is a lot more cautious now than when he started.
