My son was an NCO in the grenade pit at Camp LeJeune when a newbie pulled the pin and promptly dropped the grenade in the pit. The kid froze and my son barely managed to drag him out before it went off.
Yup, that would be the proper procedure, get the recruit out.
In the case I cited, no one knew where it was so everyone just froze in place. The most frightening for me was the two man fire support assault when the jerk turned up as my match for this live fire drill. The sergeant at the range pulled him back replaced him with someone else. It was well known this jerk was trying to get out, the “mistake” on the grenade range and firing off a live round when all weapons were supposed to have been cleared, three times already, preceeded this drill. His last way out I guess the SGT figured was to plug someone and it was not to be on his watch.
