California Chrome's Triple Crown bid could be denied by New York State regulations

His competition can’t stop him, his cough didn’t slow him down but New York regulations could stop California Chrome’s Triple Crown bid.

California Chrome wears a nasal strip and has since Dec. 22, when he started his current six race winning streak that includes victories in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Currently, New York is the only racing state in the country that doesn’t allow it for thoroughbreds, but does for harness horses racing in New York.

“These people (the owners) tell me if at any time the horse isn’t ready to go to the races don’t hesitate,” trainer Art Sherman said after California Chrome took the Preakness Stakes to go along with his Kentucky Derby win. “The horse comes first. I’m just leaving it at that.”

The strips, allegedly helps open up the nasal passages allow a horse to breathe better, like the strips some humans wear to bed to help them sleep better.

They have been banned at the New York Racing Association under rule 4033.8 that states: Only equipment specifically approved by the stewards shall be worn or carried by a jockey or a horse in a race.

According to New York State Steward Stephen Lewandowski, the connections of California Chrome can make a request to wear the strip in the June 7 Belmont Stakes, which the three stewards at Belmont Park – Lewandowski, Dr. Ted Hill, who represents the Jockey Club and Braulio Baeza Jr, who represents the NYRA, would then have to vote on it to see if they will allow it or not.

These owners are gonna pull out of a potential Triple Crown Win because of some Breathe right strip? If the horse can’t breathe he shouldn’t be running!

This article sounds like a bunch of double talk.

It makes it seem like there is a big problem, that the strips are banned.

But that doesn’t seem to be the case at all.

It’s simply up to the Stewards.

Yellow journalism, trying to in up controversy.

Exactly. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Lukas horses with them. Don’t know how old this nebulous “rule” is, but he was definitely into them at the turn of the century.

In fact, that was a fad then. It seemed to have long passed, thankfully, but maybe it’s coming back.

NBC execs will be angry about this. Ratings for the Belmont are highest in Triple Crown years. If Calif Chrome doesn’t even get to run, then interest in that race will nosedive.

It’s not that he can’t breathe. It’s another silly way people think they can enhance performance. As I stated, it was well-played fad for horse nose strips c. 2000. I think some started seeing it was pointless. Not sure he even needs it.

This is a lot of sensationalism. This is probably no deal at all.

I have mixed feelings about this brouhaha.
On the one hand I have nothing but disdain for the People's Republic of California, a corrupt and failing place well on its way to bankruptcy; it has the greatest collection of weirdos, freaks and perverts in the country.

On the other hand, those easterners (like Barbara Boxer) played a major role in creating it.

The Eastern doofuses are still the epitome of the euphemism "tradition" and I suppose White Privilege extends to horses, too. I'm not a horse racing fan, but I must admit I'm taken up with the excitement. Hype abounds.

I'll stock up on popcorn.

“...Lewandowski, Dr. Ted Hill, who represents the Jockey Club and Braulio Baeza Jr, who represents the NYRA, would then have to vote on it to see if they will allow it or not.”

Can anyone imagine these three guys voting ‘no’? They would be hooted out of racing.

The horse is brown. They can’t vote no, it would be race-ist.

Not Baeza. Legend of racing, HOF jock, no he would not lose his status. He got to ride some truly great HOF horses, too.

I am a Chromie.

This little horse and the owners have been met with so much disdain from the snooty horseracing/horsebreeder crowd. This guy cost only $10K and the owner (Martin) says he bought the horse because he believed in him. Martin hired a 77 year-old trainer and btw, the horse hasn’t lost a race. The blueblood owners in the racing circuit are not happy and they’ve nicknamed the horse’s owners as the “dumbazz owners”...mocking both the owners and the horse. The breeders have their nose in the air saying California Chrome is from weak lineage. What an uppity bunch!

California Chrome runs with heart! His owners celebrate his victories by going to the local waffle house. I’d love to see this horse get the Triple Crown!

Agree. With the interest this is generating in racing, it would behoove the decision-makers to include California Chrome, with nasal strip.

Uh, lots wrong there.

THEY came up with their (needlessly crude) “name” and symbol. The one problem I have with them. I really don’t need my young son, who likes him, hearing that foul word every time they are on TV.

Chrome HAS lost, but not much.

It is just common discussion to declare a lineage promising or not. I highly doubt that is much to do with “snootiness”, and more to do with facts. And they also know, that often gems come from nobodies, and all too often nobodies come from great bloodlines. I’d say that is all common knowledge and thus just another topic of assessing a horses chances, especially at age 2.

Happened to I’ll Have Another 2 years ago. He entered anyway. He lost the Belmont, but there is much more to that than simply air flow.

BTW, they bred Chrome themselves. There was no buying, per se.
