California Chrome's Triple Crown bid could be denied by New York State regulations

His competition can’t stop him, his cough didn’t slow him down but New York regulations could stop California Chrome’s Triple Crown bid.

California Chrome wears a nasal strip and has since Dec. 22, when he started his current six race winning streak that includes victories in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Currently, New York is the only racing state in the country that doesn’t allow it for thoroughbreds, but does for harness horses racing in New York.

“These people (the owners) tell me if at any time the horse isn’t ready to go to the races don’t hesitate,” trainer Art Sherman said after California Chrome took the Preakness Stakes to go along with his Kentucky Derby win. “The horse comes first. I’m just leaving it at that.”

The strips, allegedly helps open up the nasal passages allow a horse to breathe better, like the strips some humans wear to bed to help them sleep better.

They have been banned at the New York Racing Association under rule 4033.8 that states: Only equipment specifically approved by the stewards shall be worn or carried by a jockey or a horse in a race.

According to New York State Steward Stephen Lewandowski, the connections of California Chrome can make a request to wear the strip in the June 7 Belmont Stakes, which the three stewards at Belmont Park – Lewandowski, Dr. Ted Hill, who represents the Jockey Club and Braulio Baeza Jr, who represents the NYRA, would then have to vote on it to see if they will allow it or not.

They came up with the name because that is what they were regularly called by the “elite” of horse racing. There was that and a lot of other snottiness directed their way. The symbol is an ass which is the actual name for it. The word ass nor the ass symbol is crude or foul, I hope you and your son can handle the idea that ass is in the Bible over 100 times.

No, they DID have someONE call them dumbass for buying his DAM. That is all. Like people with good humor, they took that name for themselves and turned it around on them.

Don’t conflate one person’s comment, who may be a nobody themselves, with all of “the elite” constantly hassling them.

BTW, we know about donkeys, but it has become a profanity while also referring to the gluteus maximus, which should remain under cover, and you know that. I can use the term “bitch” at a dog show and be perfectly fine, but we all know it is mostly a foul word in common usage. And you know that.

“Weak lineage”???

Isn’t CA Chrome a direct descendant of Secretariat?

In the horse world it still means what it should, and I for one have had enough of people changing the language.

Ca. Chrome is a great-grandson of A.P. Indy, one of the most successful stallions ever. A.P. Indy was a son of Seattle Slew and Weekend Surprise, a daughter of Secretariat.

“...the horse hasn’t lost a race.”

Chrome has lost 4 times.

It’s not that he can’t breathe. It’s another silly way people think they can enhance performance. As I stated, it was well-played fad for horse nose strips c. 2000. I think some started seeing it was pointless. Not sure he even needs it.

I agree. The big change for the better occurred when Chrome got his current jockey. It wasn't the strips.

“Happened to I’ll Have Another 2 years ago. He entered anyway. He lost the Belmont...”

IHA did not lose the Belmont, he scratched. Tendon injury, if I remember correctly.

All your other points have been right on. A stable hand called one of the owners a dumb-ass for paying 8K for the brood-mare.
As you also stated, sometimes nobodies have great bloodlines.
CC goes to A.P. Indy, Seattle Slew, Secretariat on the sire’s side. Mr. Prospector, Raise a Native, Northern Dancer, etc. on the mare’s side. Though I’m sure you already knew that. :-)

ThNks, I forgot that huge disappointment of not even trying! IHA was another horse my toddler son latched onto, still asks if he’s still racing/alive! (Even being exposed frequently a 6yo doesn’t understand everything I guess!)

Yes, he has some nice prominent lines, although perhaps a tad further back than many top prospects. I wish him well. I’m glad the DAP mentioned how Pimlico was so much better than Churchill, but then connections in our internet fan circle have been complaining for years. No shock.
