Dewhurst loans for re-election bid total $5 million (Texas)
Houston Chronicle ^ | 5/19/14 | David Saleh Rauf

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst’s re-election campaign reported Monday that it has outstanding loans totaling more than $5.3 million, indicating that the incumbent lieutenant governor ponied up around $3 million out of pocket since the final week of February to try and beat Dan Patrick.

That comes on top of $2 million that Dewhurst lent his campaign earlier in the cycle.

Candidates in the May 27 runoff are facing a midnight deadline to file campaign finance reports with the Texas Ethics Commission. The full filings won’t be publicly available online until Tuesday morning — and that’s when we’ll know details about who contributed and exactly how much Dewhurst loaned his campaign.

“Patrick has talked about getting rid of the 2/3rds rule that lets Dems have 1/3 of the chairmanships in the Senate”

Actually, what Patrick calls the 2/3’s rule is a rule in the Senate that requires 2/3 of all the Senators to agree to bring legislation to a vote on the floor of the State Senate...meaning that 1/3 of the Senators can block anything. It originated when Democrats were something like 90% of the legislature...not sure exactly why.

Just as in the US Senate, the MAJORITY of Senators can scrap that rule any time they please...but Dewhurst has led the fight to keep it, and was successful at it...until November, that is. An EVEN BETTER reason for getting rid of Dewhurst.

What you say is also true, he has continued to allow Democrats, that barely get one third of the seats, and sometimes only that much, to also keep chairmanships - that is nuts - if the Dems want power again, they need to figure out a way to make their case to TEXANS, and that begins by jettisoning the national party and not nominating their type, as in Wendy Davis for governor...but the Dems would rather lose than do that.

“I’ve listened to Dan Patrick on his radio show and I find him untrustworthy...He was very down on Ted Cruz during his senate run...”

That is true...but he also knew that he would have to deal with Dewhurst in the State Senate if Dewhurst lost - as far as I’m concerned he was playing it safe there.

He will win next week - the idea of leaking Patrick’s medical records did not work well for Dewhurst, so now that Patrick will have the power, we will all get to find out whether he’s a deal-maker, or, as he claims, a Tea Party person. We do know one thing for sure, Dewhurst has NEVER been on the side of conservatives.

Yeah, I was in the middle of moving some plants to the big garden and I didn't articulate any of that very well.

Dewhurst must go, and if he does, Texas will really take off.

Even if Patrick is a loser, he doesn't have Dewhurst's years of entrenched good-ole-boy system, and the conservatives have a chance to keep him from building one.

Agree...Patrick just might do what he says, once he has the power. We know that Dewhurst never has and never will.
