Solzhenitsyn is too tough on his countrymen when he says they deserved everything that happened. Nobody deserved that.

Well, maybe the German Nazis .... but damned few others.

As for the Russian NKVD officer who did the mass liquidations of the captive Polish officers held in Moscow (separately from those who were murdered in the Katyn Forest) in the basement of the Lubyanka .... he eventually committed suicide. Even NKVD men, demons in battle against the Nazis, weren't all men of iron.
