For Michael Powell, a 53-year-old ex-convict, his tent off the highway in Camden, N.J., is what he has called home for nearly a decade.

But on Tuesday, he and dozens of others living in homeless encampments known as “tent cities” throughout Camden were forced out—leaving many of them homeless all over again.

The eviction was conducted by the state of New Jersey, as well as Camden county and city, for health and safety reasons. […]

Amid the commotion on Tuesday, Gino Lewis, director of housing at the Camden County Improvement Authority, assured people that the county would work to find housing and services. […] But there just aren’t enough spaces in Camden’s shelters. Plus, some people living in tent cities, because of prior incarceration for certain crimes and other reasons, don’t qualify for the subsidies they need to stay in shelters. …

This would be huge news if a Republican was President.

why do the liberals only talk about homeless when a Republican is president?

Anecdotal evidence where I live is that there are many more panhandlers in the median strips of roads since Obama has been president.

In 1930 depression days, the tent-cities were called Hoovervilles.

The goal of leftists is to house everybody is soviet union-style 12x12 rabbit hutches in huge megalopolises. Except for priviliege party members. All human activity, except for privileged party members, outside the restricted zone will be severely punished. No cars, no motorized vehicles, certainly no guns, except for the elite party members, will be allowed. All for the good of everybody. (snicker)

At some point, we may have to put barriers around some of our major cities and declare them prisons. Sort of like this futuristic film:

Reasons we have a “homeless” problem today that really did not exist until liberals got involved.

At one time, every major city had a section of town where there were low cost hotels (referred to as flop houses). While you nor I would prefer not to stay in such a place, they were cheap (in some cases a quarter a night for a bed). They had the advantage of being out of the cold in the winter, and somewhat safer than sleeping on the street.

At one time mentally ill people that would not or could not take care of themselves were picked up and committed to an asylum, where they may or may not have gotten treated, but at least they had a bed, a roof, food and medical care.

At one time there were vagrancy laws that kept the “bums” from staying in one place too long.

All of these were done away with in the name of civil rights (never mind the civil rights of the citizen that works hard pays taxes and not commit crimes).

So 60 years after the beginning of this great social experiment how are these people better off then they were before?

Before I sound to heartless, there were many private charities to assist those that had a run of bad luck to get back on their feet.

Seriously. Where are these people supposed to live? Sick and tired of the government at all levels thinking that of “the people” THEY are the only ones with power and rights.

Another movie the tent city brings to mind is “They Live”. Even twenty five years ago, I thought it was a plausible scenario for our society.

I totally agree. If somebody wants to (or needs to) live off the grid for a while, that’s their business. I know decent people who do, or have done so, even in my own family. There is no requirement for free Americans to be a part of the white picket fence Stepford Society, with corporate jobs, home mortgages, car loans, health insurance, 401K, etc.
