UKIP has gained council seats from all the main parties, the latest local election results show.
UKIP's performance held Labour back from making the gains many expected, and weakened the party's grip on its traditional northern heartlands.
The Conservatives have also lost seats to the anti-EU party and the Liberal Democrats continue to be punished by voters.
According to the latest Sky News projection, the results so far would give a hung parliament at the 2015 General Election.

GO UKIP!
Great news
Maybe we need our own party too
UKIP are Libertarians. We need a conservative party, and not just in name like Britain has.
Libertarians who want to limit immigration?
That doesn’t sound like libertarians to me....Libertarians want completely open borders.
That’s not entirely true. They are a mixture of conservatives and libertarians but even the libertarians in UKIP are mostly of the conservative sort and they are for British sovereignty and restricted immigration. They have been doing a great job of pulling in disaffected blue collar labour party also. They’ve picked up 80+ seats tonight and will come close to have winning 100 and will come Sunday likely have won a clear majority of EU seats. Like the BJP Modi win in India, the UKIP win is a win for us far more so than Sarkozy ever was in France. France btw is going to realign also and shift right in a big way come their next general election.
This may prove to be a watershed moment in US politics.
UKIP is showing us the way.
They’re real desperate, aren’t they.
The BJP/Modi win a plus for the USA? After the press described Modi as “India’s Putin”?
A UKIP candidate accused of having Nazi body art has defended his choice of tattoos.
UKIP has a libertarian bent but not like some US libertarians who are left wingers at heart. UKIP is best described as a revitalization of Thatcher/Churchill style politics. Just as the Tea Party is in many ways a revitalization of Reagan/Goldwater style politics.
2.5 The Party is a democratic, libertarian Party and will espouse policies which:Like US libertarians, they are also opposed to foreign aid and foreign wars, so that makes me wonder where they stand on defense.
- promote and encourage those who aspire to improve their personal situation and those who seek to be self-reliant, whilst providing protection for those genuinely in need;
- favor the ability of individuals to make decisions in respect of themselves;
- seek to diminish the role of the State;
- lower the burden of taxation on individuals and businesses;
- ensure proper control over the United Kingdoms borders;
- strengthen and guarantee the essential, traditional freedoms and liberties of all people in the United Kingdom.
This is a historic night like when the Berlin wall came down! The dragon of Liberalism is wounded, lets hope it is forced to retreat or better yet bleeds out and dies for another century.
This is the end of the beginning.
If this continues, the British government might start looking for some pretext to ban the UKIP. Perhaps the letter mentioned in post #4 will do.
Yes and since when do you hang on the opinion of the media? Modi is excellent. A strong free market conservative. The socialists libs were routed for the first time ever since India’s independence. They didn’t like Modi because after a bunch of Muslims torched a bus full of Hindu men, women, children he is accused of not moving quick enough to protect the Muslims, which he was cleared of in court. If you don’t see that as a positive then you should re-evaluate your political identity. :-) Talk to some Indian American Conservatives and maybe they can explain it to you.
