The Green Lantern Theory of the Presidency, explained {Obama apologist]
Vox ^ | 20 May 2014 | Ezra Klein

Posted on 05/23/2014 7:20:12 PM PDT by Cronos

Presidents consistently overpromise and underdeliver. What they need to say to get elected far outpaces what they can actually do in office. President Obama is a perfect example. His 2008 campaign didn't just promise health-care reform, a stimulus bill, and financial regulation. It also promised a cap-and-trade bill to limit carbon emissions, comprehensive immigration reform, gun control, and much more. His presidency, he said, would be change American could believe in. But it's clear now that much of the change he promised isn't going to happen — in large part because he doesn't have the power to make it happen.

...According to Brendan Nyhan, the Dartmouth political scientist who coined the term, the Green Lantern Theory of the Presidency is "the belief that the president can achieve any political or policy objective if only he tries hard enough or uses the right tactics." In other words, the American president is functionally all-powerful, and whenever he can't get something done, it's because he's not trying hard enough, or not trying smart enough.

he US President has little formal power to make Congress do anything. He can't force Congress to vote on a bill. He can't force Congress to pass a bill. And even if he vetoes a bill Congress can simply overturn his veto. So in direct confrontations with Congress — and that describes much of American politics these days — the president has few options.

.. Doesn't this let Obama off the hook?

For what? Not doing things he doesn't have the power to do?

Obama can do a good or bad job within the actual limits of the presidency.

The media has been hinting it all over the place for several years, although they can’t say it straight out and the public is too stupid to pick it up. However,, when Newsweek has him on the front with “The First Gay President” you can’t be much more obvious than that.

When has Obama let the limits of the Presidency get in the way of his doing something he wanted to do?

An even bigger question is when has the Congress ever stopped Obama from exceeding his presidential powers?

There was a thread earlier today in which the Democrats came right out and blatantly said (slight paraphrase): "If you don't let the president do exactly what he wants, then he'll just go and do exactly what he wants."

It's called dictatorship.

Actually, no.
Obama is the extreme example by a huge margin, to date, in U.S. History.
Admittedly, I have not perused newspapers from every president's tenure, which is the only way historical reality can be checked.

Every period has examples of the tendency to pimp politically, and to engage in extreme irrational, unfounded, and often imaginary accusations, sort of like what Harry Reid has done repeatedly the last few years; In the past, however, no pretense was made to honor subtlety.

I thought werwere dealing with an adult here, until I got to this part.

HELLO!!??!!

Obama has, if fact done dozens of things he does not have the legal Constitutional power to do. And he somehow devised a way to assure immunity from prosecution, by the simple (and brilliant!) expediency of appointing his own man; Owned literally and willingly, the only individual who has the power to prosecute a president, the Attorney General.

So those three sentences become meaningless, irrelevant, internally inconsistent and contradictory.

Now if the Supreme Court had the ability to accept challenges from THE PEOPLE, the one clear lapse of the Founding Fathers would disappear.

In their defense, however, historical context is everything. During that age, it was literally impossible for them to conceive that any individual attaining the highest office in the land would have the balls to attempt what Obama has done. Another mitigating factor is that then honor existed, as did dueling, which certainly would have solved the crisis, should it have been attempted then.

Other than that, it is a thought-provoking article.

You need a lot more power than the U.S. president to force people to eat the Costco-sized tray of sh*t sandwiches he was serving up.

People are too quick to forget. Many of us called “birthers” and castigated buy the left and by progressives for seeking facts on the man they call Barack Obama have said it loud and often..

Obama was foisted on the electorate. He is supremely unqualified according to both the constitution and according to the experiential requirements of the office.

The truth will one day be revealed, likely after the great pretender leaves office. But those who live in the world of leftist utopia have accomplished their politically correct agenda of socializing the contry and polarizing it, crying “ Our First Black President!”

Barack Obama is no president. Its fairly obvious now, is it not? Let the race riots begin.

What do you call the greatest assembly of eunuchs since the fall of the Chinese Empire?

The US Congress.
